JULIANA TRAIL: stage 8 Bohinj Bistrica - Podbrdo

We combined this stage with stage 7, which made for a very long and tiring day. We would not recommend that, but rather spend more time in lake Bohinj and doing the waterfall and doing this stage alone, or skipping stage 7 and taking a bus instead. From Bohinjska Bistrica, the stage goes on pavement past a church, we took the path that was marked on the map (red circles) instead. The first bit of uphill is very steep, and then once you are on the gravel path it is less steep but with amazing views. After the first bit of uphill you cross beautiful alpine meadows (long pants recommended) and then begin climbing again. on a (relatively) clear day, this stage has the best view of Triglav that we know of. At the top of the ridge there is a hut with a picnic table that you can eat lunch at. The first bit of descent is very very steep, but after about 500ft is less steep, though occasional sections are steep. We took the train from Podbrdo to Hudajuzna, but if you stay in Podbrdo be aware that the Mercator closes at 3pm. The bar next door is popular among locals, and has cold beer. We stayed at Bar Zver in Hudajuzna and Renata was a fabulous host that we would highly recommend.
