The valley of the turquoise blue Soča River attracts hikers, mountaineers and cyclists as well as water sport enthusiasts. The pretty villages of Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin are worth a visit, as are the numerous gorges and waterfalls. From the Soča valley, a popular route leads to the Seven Lakes and up to Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak in the National Park.

Further south and right on the Italian border lies the bustling Nova Gorica - once a workers' town, now a modern amusement park with numerous casinos. The hinterland has more natural highlights to offer: deep valleys, terraced vineyards and pretty medieval villages accompany you on your way south.

Horse lovers should make a detour to Lipica and visit the famous Lippizaner stud farm. There, you can't only experience the art and grace of the white horses up close but also explore the karst landscape on beautiful walking trails between the paddocks.

Piran, Portorož and Koper are situated on the Slovenian Mediterranean coast. Although they are located so close to each other, their character couldn't be more different. While Piran has a beautiful, historic old town with an authentic fishing port, Portorož is in the firm hands of tourists. There, casino visitors cavort alongside yacht owners - and passionated sunbathers. The beach of Portorož is the only one with golden sand in all of Littoral.

Salt mining is omnipresent in the south of the Slovenian region - a visit to the salt flats of Sečovlje is a highlight, where you can learn exciting facts and treat yourself to a relaxing spa day with sea salt and mud. Hikers discover the Strunjan Landscape Park, the Dragonja Valley or the Boškarin trail through the hinterland of Littoral.

JULIANA TRAIL: stage 13 Kobarid - Bovec by Tina
October 30, 2022 · Community
Scenery was spectacular! It was great to be able to see and hear the river for most of the trail. The trail was definitely a challenge in some parts. Lots of ups and downs along the river and very cool to be able to see kayakers in the water. We decided to cut the trail short around the 2nd suspension bridge and walked to Trvorno, where we caught the bus to Bovec.
