Originally built as a vicarage, the history of St Michael’s can be traced back to 1282, when a vicar was first mentioned. Until 1525, the church was part of a Cistercian abbey, which was dissolved during the Reformation.
The Reformation was an extremely important event for Jena and the neighbouring towns and villages. Martin Luther often preached in the parish church in Jena and debated at what is now the ‘Hotel Schwarzer Bär’ and in the surrounding area with students, friends and critics.
The late Gothic aisle church with its impressive façade houses a stone Gothic pulpit where Luther preached and the Reformer’s original gravestone, which was created in 1549 by the Erfurt-based bell founder Heinrich Ziegler according to an image drawn by Lucas Cranach the Elder.
