Residenzschloss Altenburg mit Schloss- und Spielkartenmuseum
Tourismusverband Altenburger Land e.V. Verified partner Explorers Choice
The castle complex comprises the Baroque ‘corp de logis’ building and the imposing castle church with its late-Gothic choir. The Renaissance gallery in the little castle courtyard, as well as the squires’ barracks, the Prinzenpalais, the Hausmannsturm tower and the Mantelturm tower (so-called bottle) all set slightly further away, are other important elements of the impressively spacious complex. The main rooms of the former castle are today used by the Castle and Playing Cards Museum.
Until 26 November 2017, the castle is hosting a special exhibition entitled ‘Georg Spalatin - Martin Luthers Weggefährte in Altenburg’ (Georg Spalatin – Martin Luther’s companion in Altenburg). In addition to numerous exhibits, you can also see an extensive collection of correspondence with Martin Luther and experience a virtual tour through the Spalatin family’s house.
