The castle is located on a rise in the centre of Altenburg and its outline and imposing towers dominate the cityscape.
The former fortress was converted into a castle in the 18th century by Frederick II and Frederick III and served as a residence for the Dukes of Saxe-Altenburg. In the 12th century, the complex was made an imperial stronghold by Emperor Barbarossa, and in 1455, the historical kidnapping of the Princes Ernst and Albrecht took place here, also known as the Altenburg Stealing of the Princes.

The castle complex comprises the Baroque ‘corp de logis’ building and the imposing castle church with its late-Gothic choir. The Renaissance gallery in the little castle courtyard, as well as the squires’ barracks, the Prinzenpalais, the Hausmannsturm tower and the Mantelturm tower (so-called bottle) all set slightly further away, are other important elements of the impressively spacious complex. The main rooms of the former castle are today used by the Castle and Playing Cards Museum.

Until 26 November 2017, the castle is hosting a special exhibition entitled ‘Georg Spalatin - Martin Luthers Weggefährte in Altenburg’ (Georg Spalatin – Martin Luther’s companion in Altenburg). In addition to numerous exhibits, you can also see an extensive collection of correspondence with Martin Luther and experience a virtual tour through the Spalatin family’s house.
