The Postojna Caves in Slovenia are the second largest stalactite cave system in the world.
The caves extend over 24 kilometres, about five of which are accessible to visitors. The first 3 kilometres or so are covered by train. During a tour through the easily accessible paths of the caves, you are accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who knows a lot about the history of the cave and the special features of the dripstones. Audio guides are also available in several languages. The concrete footpath in the cave leads comfortably up and down to the various levels and into the different halls. White or reddish shimmering, stalactites growing in width or in length - there are some differences between the areas in the cave. Touching the rocks is prohibited, as touching them causes them to become agitated and stop growing. If needed, the cave guide will show some dripstones where the structure can be explored as they stop growing. Flashlights are also prohibited in the cave. Especially in the entrance area of the cave, when the train stops, it is clearly visible how the pollution is also reflected down in the cave. At the end of the tour through the cave, you come across an aquarium in which two specimens of the grotto elm (lat. Proteus anguinus) live. Several specimens of the cave dweller live in the Pivka River, which flows through the Postojna caves.
