From 14th until 20th Cent. Kropa was the centre of Slovenia's iron forging industry. Now it  is famous for its preserved architectural and technical heritage.

Unique in its appearance and stories from the past, this former iron forging centre is tucked away in the lush Lipnica valley. Some of Kropa's houses date back over 500 years. For over 4 centuries nails were the main product. There were 120 different kids of nails. They were being forged in 19 forges in Kropa and transported to mediteranean area. 

The rich legacy of the manual forging of nails and artistic iron forging is attested to in the Iron Forging Museum and one forge, the Vigenjc Vice, still keeps it's 19th Century look.

What to see in and around Kropa:

  • The village centre with its distinguished traditional architecture and wrought iron features
  • Water barriers and other technical equipmenton the gushing Kroparica stream
  • The Iron Forging Museum, exhibiting the history of iron forging
  • Vigenjc Vice, a well-preserved forge from 18th century
  • St Leonard's Church with lovely views over the village centre
  • The source of the Kroparica stream on the trail towards Jamnik.

Opening hours

The museum is closed on Mondays, other days it is opened:

  • January, February: Tuesday - Friday from 3am to 3pm
  • March, April, November, December: Tuesday - SUnday from 10am to 4pm
  • May until October: Tuesday - Sunday from 10am to 6pm

Price:

There is no entrance for the village itself. There is an entrance fee for the museums:

Public transport

There are buses between Radovljica and Kropa and the ride takes about 20 min. TIMETABLE

In July and August, there is also a special Hop-On Hop-Off bus each Tuesday, connectig Bled, Radovljica and Kropa. READ MORE

Getting there

Kropa is great to be explored during a half-day trip from Radovljica or Bled. You can visit it with bike or car. From Bled, follow signs for Lesce/Radovljica and turn towards Kropa in Lesce. Follow main road through Lipnica Valley and turn right for Kropa after about 15 min. 

 

If traveling with your car, from Kropa you can continue to Jamnik to have a view from one of the most scenic spots in Slovenia or even furter towards Škofja Loka for a walk around the medieval town centre.

If traveling with bike, Jamnik can still be a choise for good bikers, otherwise stop in the village called Kamna Gorica for a quick look.

Parking

In Kropa you can park near the water reservoir adn there are some spots right in the old centre. The parkings everywhere in Kropa are free of charge.
