The beauty and quietness of the forest encouraged Prince Heinrich XXII of the Reuss Older Line (1846-1902) to be buried in the middle of the woods, close to his favourite hunting lodge.
He commissioned the Greiz architect, Eduard Oberländer, in 1878 to build a chapel in Gothic style with a crypt and this was completed in 1883. The Prince and his wife, Ida, and his son, who died later, have been buried there since 1902. The graveyard fell into decay through the demise of the German Empire and later upheavals. The thorough building work from the crypt to the roof also unearthed the old portal of the chapel. You can discover the structure’s simple elegance during a visit to Waldhaus recreational park. The mausoleum is surrounded by a beautiful forest, the Greiz-Werdau Forest nature reserve, and the animal enclosure of the town of Greiz.
