Horse riding in Žirovnica
For those who are not that experienced, Žirovnica offers a riding school where friendly locals teach you all you need to know about horseback riding.
Horseback riding through the unspoilt nature beneath Mt. Stol is a very unique experience. Explore the picturesque surroundings accompanied by a guide or choose your own cross-country trail. It is also possible to rent riding equipment or go for a ride on a traditional cart or hay carriage.
Žirovnica offers many different riding paths in the flat terrain of the valley. You can take a ride in a traditional horse-drawn cart called a zapravljivček (a ‘spender’) . Žirovnica also offers a special and unique experience, suitable for groups, a ride in a traditional horse-drawn hay carriage called a lojtrnik.
The Zima riding centre in Žirovnica organises a horse-riding school for beginners, whether adults or children, whilst recreational outdoor riding is also available, among other pursuits.

Žirovnica lies in the heart of the Upper Carniola Region (Slovene: Gorenjska), surrounded by the Karavanke mountains on one side and by the Julian Alps on the other. Žirovnica is just a stone’s throw away from Slovenia’s most cherished jewel – Bled and the sweetest Slovenian town – Radovljica.
Žirovnica is located 5km from Bled, 22km from Kranjska Gora and 25km from Bohinj. In the immediate vicinity of Žirovnica, there are numerous towns and sights of interest, including the medieval old town of Radovljica (6km), the ALC Lesco Sports Aerodrome (5km), Bled Golf Course, and the Šobec campsite in Lesce. Žirovnica is located 35km from Slovenia’s main airport. The Žirovnica Institute for Tourism and Culture is situated in Matija Čop’s birth house.

By train
The railway station Žirovnica is located along the railway line Ljubljana – Jesenice. The railway station is a perfect starting point to easily get by foot to all the main sites of interests.

By bus
Žirovnica is connected with regular bus lines with the surrounding towns and larger cities. There are regular bus rides from Ljubljana going through Kranj and Radovljica. The ride from Ljubljana to Žirovnica takes approximately 1h 17 min.
There are two bus stops in Žirovnica; Vrba and Žirovnica (near the railway station).
The bus provider from Ljubljana is Arriva Alpetour, which provides the timetables online. Select the starting station (for example Ljubljana AP – main bus station) and the arrival destination (for example Žirovnica OPC or Vrba).
If you fancy travelling by bus to Slovenia, you can also opt for Flixbus to get to Bled or Nomago.
By plane
The nearest airport, the Jože Pučnik International Airport Ljubljana (Ljubljana airport), is located 39 km (30 min) from Žirovnica. Several transportation services operate from the airport.

Getting there
By car
Žirovnica is 40 km away from the Austrian border (Wurzenpaß) and 46 km away from the Italian border (Fusine Laghi – Rateče). To reach Žirovnica you can take the highway (direction Ljubljana) and then the exit for Bled.
If your starting point is Ljubljana, take the A2 highway northwest from Ljubljana and follow the signs for Kranj or Jesenice. Then take the exit for Bled. The journey time is 40 minutes, but it can extend depending on the season.
Do not forget that you need a vignette to drive on the highway in Slovenia!
Coming from Austria (Villach) or Italy (Tarvisio) along the A2 motorway, take the exit for Lipce, turn towards Jesenice and then turn right in Slovenski Javornik (the first traffic lights; signpost Žirovnica 5km).
Coming from Ljubljana along the A2 motorway, past Kranj. On the motorway, take the exit for Bled, and then at the roundabout the exit for Žirovnica.
