Skiing in the wonderful high-mountain environment is only interrupted by tunnel passages. If the slopes and ravines are covered with a lot of snow you can easily avoid the tunnel passages and continue skiing.

At the parking lot where the road for Mt. Mangart turns, continue along the road until you reach the bridge. Leave the road here and turn to the left across the embankment which is covered with snow if the conditions are good and continue to the Mangart Mountain pasture. Follow the summer road past the ramp and continue through the forest to the riverbed of the Beli potok Stream. Cross the stream and ascend along the steep forest slope on the right until you reach the road. Follow the summer road along the steep forest slope to the start of the winter road leading to the Mangart Mountain pass. Turn to the left beneath Mt. Mesnovka and continue in hairpin bends until you reach the ruins of the old mountain hut. Cross the slope above the ruins and continue to the depression where you will have to decide how to continue according to the conditions. From here, you usually continue towards the highest point of the mountain pass or until you leave the Plazje avalanche area (Italian side of the mountain – Forcella della lavina). On the mountain pass you can enjoy in the views of the Fusine Lakes below. You can decide to continue to the start of the Italian route leading to Mt. Mangart where you will have a wonderful chance to ski into the distinctive basin beneath the mountain. This will, of course, require another ascend to the highest point above the Mangartska koča Mountain hut where you will only have to descend back to the starting point.

Author’s recommendation

If you are inexperienced in walking along demanding and narrow passages in the forest you can ascend along the road to the last tunnel which is usually unpassable during the winter months.

Safety information

After heavy snowfall, this tour is only safe if you make it along the road until you reach the winter road. The slope beneath Mt. Mesnovka is quite prone to avalanches.

Equipment

This tour requires complete winter equipment.

Tips, hints and links

Instead of skiing along the same trail you came from (in case of favourable snow conditions) you can also descend down the ravine of the Beli potok Stream. You can descend into this ravine in front of the first tunnel on the return to the valley. Plan your descent in accordance with snow conditions. If snow conditions are good and if the ravine is well covered with snow it will not be difficult to make a decision. Otherwise, plan your descent from the road approximately 200 m in front of the entrance into the tunnel.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the parking lot next to the bridge across the Predelica Stream, continue along the road to the second bridge along the Mangart road. Turn to the left here and continue along the summer road past the Mangart Mountain pasture and through the forest to the riverbed of the Beli potok Stream. Here, turn uphill to the right until you reach the road which you have to cross. Continue to a small clearing where you have to turn to the left into the forest. After you overcome the quite steep slope you come return to the road. Continue along the road and pass two tunnels. Beneath Mt. Mesnovka, after you cross the usually most problematic passage across the ravine (in front of the last tunnel), turn and continue along the slope. The direction is shown by the winter marking sign. Continue in hairpin bends and ascend as high as possible above the ruins of the old mountain hut, cross another ravine and you will find yourself on the spacious Mangart Mountain pass. You can end this tour on the top of the mountain pass or decide to continue to the wonderful slopes just beneath the foothills of Mt. Mangart. You should ski down the same trail you came from.
