The sightseeing Mt. Vrh nad Peski is located east of Mt. Krn. Because of its location and access along the Lužnica Valley, this mountain offers skiing later in the spring compared to somewhat higher neighbouring mountain whose slopes are more exposed to the sun. This tour includes certain steep sections which usually have to be overcome on foot because they can be slippery and dangerous for avalanches.

Start your ascent to Mt. Vrh nad Peski from the southern side. The starting point for this tour is located on the Kuhinja Mountain pasture, the same as for the tour to Mt. Krn from the south. You should first ascend from the Kuhinja Mountain pasture to the Leskovca Mountain pasture and then continue along the steep channel to the Lužnica Valley which you have to follow to the Prag Mountain pass. Before your reach the Prag mountain pass, turn to the right towards the mountain pass between Mt. Piramida and Mt. Vrh nad Peski from where you will reach the top. You should ski down the same route you came from.

Author’s recommendation

We recommend you to take this tour when there is no danger of avalanches. This is a nice spring tour. It is best to start the ascent early in the morning when the snow is hard-packed and to ski from the top when the snow softens a little. You can combine this tour with the tour to Mt. Batognica. It is also possible to ascend to this mountain instead of ascending to Mt. Vrh nad Peski. In this case, turn left from the Prag Mountain pass and continue along the gentle ridge to the top of Mt. Batognica. You should descend from the top down the route you came from.

Safety information

We recommend you to take this tour in spring conditions when the snow is already run up and there is less danger of avalanches.

The channel between Mt. Maselnik and Mt. Veliki Stador is very steep, slippery and dangerous for avalanches. When the snow is hard-packed, we recommend you to make the ascent on foot with the use of appropriate equipment (crampons, ice axe). The following section also includes certain spots which can be slippery and dangerous for avalanches.

Tips and hints

You can check the current conditions above the Kuhinja Mountain pasture on the webcam of the Koča na planini Kuhinja Mountain hut.

Before you plan to take this tour, make sure to check the weather forecast. Clouds often form in the Krn Mountain range, which is why visibility can decrease.

Turn-by-turn directions

Parking is available at the arranged parking lot on the Kuhinja Mountain pasture. Just behind the parking lot, you can find a junction where you have to turn to the right towards the Leskovca Mountain pasture. Gradually ascend towards this mountain pasture and warm up for the steep ascent which follows. Above the mountain pasture, you will soon notice a distinctive channel between Mt. Maselnik and Mt. Veliki Stador, which is dangerous for avalanches. Ascend along this channel to a small mountain pass above the lake in the Lužnica Valley (1,858 m), turn to the left towards Mt. Maselnik and continue along the Lužnica Valley to the Prag Mountain pass located between Mt. Batognica and Mt. Vrh nad Peski. Before you reach the Prag Mountain pass, turn to the right towards the mountain pass between Mt. Vrh nad Peski and Mt. Piramida and then follow the ridge to the top. You should ski down the same route you came from.
