This nice family panorama tour from the town of Tolmin is routed through the forest, where you are accompanied by the rippling of the Tolminka River, to the Polog Mountain pasture where you can enjoy in splendid views of the surrounding mountains.
Distance 18.4 km
Drive along the local road from the town of Tolmin to the village of Zatolmin where you start following the signs for the Javorca Plateau and the Polog Mountain pasture. Along the trail you can enjoy in wonderful views of the town of Tolmin and its surrounding area. When you arrive to the Church of St. Peter you enter into the wider area of the Triglav National Park. From here, continue for approximately seven kilometres along an undemanding gently ascending forest road which offers pleasant shadow during the summer months. Just behind the Laborca Spring, where you can quench your thirst with medicinal water, splendid views open towards the surrounding mountains. You soon arrive to the junction where you can turn to the left in order to visit the memorial Church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca. Because the road to the church is very steep we recommend you to leave your bicycle at the parking lot and get to the church on foot. Otherwise, continue straight ahead. If you pay attention, you will notice the remnants of military bunkers from the period between World War I and World War II after less than two kilometres of cycling. The trail will then immediately bring you to the lowest mountain pasture of the upper Soča Valley. On your return to the town of Tolmin you can stop in the village of Zatolmin and refresh yourself in the Gostilna Zatolmin Restaurant.
You can also take a circular trail to the source of the Tolminka River and return across the Prode Mountain pasture where you have the chance to visit the megalithic circle in the immediate vicinity of the Polog Mountain pasture.
Update: July 30, 2019
Tips and hintsThe Polog Mountain pasture used to be a military settlement during World War I and the rear of the Austro-Hungarian troops. During the period between World War I and World War II the Italian soldiers built several concrete bunkers whose remnants can still be seen today in the vicinity of the present mountain pasture.
