This nice cycling tour which starts and ends in the town of Kobarid can be upgraded by visiting three waterfalls. One of them - the Kozjak Waterfall – is regarded as one of the most attractive Slovenian waterfalls.

From the starting point at Kamp Koren, you start cycling along the gradually ascending paved road. Along the road you will face slight and more demanding ascents. After approximately two kilomentres of cycling, the road levels up. After another two kilometres of comfortable cycling you arrive to the village of Drežnica with splendid views of Mt. Krasji vrh and Mt. Krn. From the centre of the village you follow the sign pointing to the right towards the village of Koseč where you can visit the old Church of St. Just and the picturesque Koseč Gorges.

Along the road towards the village of Koseč you can notice signs directing you to the waterfalls Krampež and Sopot which are both worth visiting, especially after rainfall. You can make a part of the way to these waterfalls on bicycle, but you will have to overcome a short ascent on foot to get to the first and to the second waterfall.

You continue along a one-kilometre-long descent from the village of Koseč back to the village of Drežnica. On the road from the village of Drežnica to the town of Kobarid you will turn at the sign towards the beautiful village of Magozd located beneath the mighty southern wall of Mt. Krasji vrh. You will leave the village along the marked cart track towards the Kozjak Waterfall and return to the starting point. Visit of the Kozjak Waterfall is certainly the cherry on the top of this magnificent tour.

Author’s recommendation

From the village of Magozd to the starting point at Kamp Koren, cycling is only possible with mountain bikes. At certain sections, the trail is routed along rocky terrain and is inappropriate for inexperienced cyclists.

Safety information

Waterfalls Sopot and Krampež are easily accessible. The trail to the upper waterfall Krampež is secured with a chain, and the access is only possible by using iron clamps. The access requires experience and caution.

Equipment

I recommend cycling with mountain bikes because the trail from the village of Magozd past the Kozjak Waterfall to the starting point is routed along a cart track whose condition is not the best at certain sections. The section form the Kozjak Waterfall to Kamp Koren runs on rocky terrain which makes cycling with trekking bicycles more difficult and even impossible at some sections.

Tips, hints and links

Interesting sights along the trail:

- Church of St. Just beneath the village of Koseč – one of the oldest sacral buildings in the Soča region.

- Koseč Gorges – marked trail starts next to the Church of St. Just.

- Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in in the village of Drežnica.

- Kozjak Waterfall,

Turn-by-turn directions

From Kamp Koren, ascend along the paved road to the village of Drežnica. The ascent is four kilometres long, however, the last two kilometres are somewhat more level.

In the village, follow the signs pointing to the right towards the village of Koseč. If you would like to visit the Koseč Gorges and the Church of St. Just, you have to leave your bicycle in the village and continue on foot along the marked trail.

From the village of Koseč, descend along the accessible path toward the village of Drežnica. After approximately 500 metres you notice two stone carving artefacts on your right representing the sun and the moon, and signs pointing towards two waterfalls. The trail to the waterfalls is not paved and is constantly ascending. It is only appropriate if you cycle with mountain bikes. If you leave your bicycle at the signs, the ascent to the first waterfall will take you approximately 10 minutes, whilst you will arrive to the second waterfall after approximately another 200 metres.

Both waterfalls, Krampež and Sopot, fall into wonderful pools beneath where you can refresh yourself during summer months.

After the visit of the waterfalls, continue cycling to the village of Drežnica. After approximately 200 metres of the road from the village of Drežnica to the town of Kobarid you arrive to a junction where an asphalt road turns towards the village of Magozd. This road takes you beneath the mighty wall of Mt. Krasji vrh and offers marvellous views. At the entry to the village you can notice the sign pointing to the left towards the town Kobarid and the Kozjak Waterfall.

The cart track is initially quite comfortable. Below the first hay barn along the trail, the cart track becomes slightly rockier and difficult for less experienced cyclists, which is why many cyclists pass this section on foot. From here, you descend along the grassy terrain and along a narrow trail to the junction with the well-marked trail towards the Kozjak Waterfall. I highly recommend you to visit this natural wonder of the Soča region. You can cycle to this sight, however, you can make the last third of the trail on foot.

You can return to the starting point of this tour by following the access road to the Kozjak Waterfall. This road runs across various terrains and is predominantly comfortable. Before you reach the section called Zaročišče the ascent becomes somewhat steep.

Public transport

There is no public transportation available to the starting point.

Getting there

You can get to the starting point along the Soča Valley from the town of Tolmin and the city of Nova Gorica or from the Bovec area (the town of Bovec can be reached across the Predel, Vršič and Učja Mountain pass).

Parking

At the starting point, parking is available at the parking lot in front of Kamp Koren.
