Embark on an exciting adventure along a cycling trail that will not let you down. In the past, engineers planned to build a railway in Bohinj that would connect both valleys, but it was never built. Therefore, the original plans for the railway were thus used in 2011 to build a great cycling route that runs along the left bank of the Sava Bohinjka River in the Lower Bohinj Valley and through the alpine villages of the Upper Bohinj Valley. Entry points to the cycling route are located in Bohinjska Bistrica, Brod, Savica, Stara Fužina, Studor and Srednja vas. The route is mostly asphalt road and appropriate for all types of bicycles. Only a section between Češnjica and Brod (across the Senožeta meadows) is stone road, thus the use of a mountain bike is recommended.

Author’s recommendation

To enter the cycling route, use the car park at the Danica Campsite in Bohinjska Bistrica (Lower Bohinj Valley) or the car park at the Senožeta ski centre in Srednja vas (Upper Bohinj Valley).

Turn-by-turn directions

The info board near the car park at the Danica Campsite directs you to the cycling route that runs past the football pitch and Danica Campsite and across the wooden footbridge over the Sava Bohinjka River. After a couple of hundred metres turn left and continue along the asphalt road past the beautiful meadows to Brod village. Here, where the route merges with the main road follow the cycling signs to the bridge (on the left) in the Savica village. Leave the main road, turn right and follow the cycling route. Cycle along the left bank of the river and enjoy the magnificent views of the Bohinj and Tolmin mountains. Right before entering the Upper Bohinj Valley, please be attentive to passing cyclists, since you drive down a short but steep hill. When coming to Stara Fužina, turn right before the bridge across the Mostnica River and continue along the left bank of the Mostnica River to the confluence of the Mostnica and Ribnica Rivers. Before the bridge crossing the Ribnica River, turn right and ride along the route until you cross the road at Studor village. Cross the main road and turn right into the village at the first houses you encounter. Follow the cycling signs and turn right at the wayside shrine, then head left past the Mrcina Ranch (on your right). After a short descent, cross the main road and ride on the route among the meadows towards the Senožeta ski centre (attention: follow the asphalt road at the wayside shrine). With the ski slopes are on your right, continue along the asphalt cycling route to Češnjica. Soon you will see the route signs that direct you to the right across a steep hill. After a few metres the macadam road starts. Follow the signs for Brod village. Be careful when riding down the hills because the surface is quite soft, especially along the longer descent just above the village. When you enter the village you come to the road that you have already cycled. Turn left and follow the signs for Bohinjska Bistrica.
