Cycle tour - "Mommelstein Cycle Route" - From the Rennsteig to the Werra Valley - Thuringian Forest
The connection of the Rennsteig and Werratal long-distance cycle routes makes this small but beautiful cycle path, on the route of a former railway line, attractive for everyone.
One of the most scenic cycle paths in Thuringia is the Mommelstein Cycle Path. On the route of the former railway line Schmalkalden - Brotterode steam engines once puffed through the charming countryside. Since 2003, enthusiastic cyclists have been riding there on their bikes and easily mastering the sometimes demanding uphill sections. A short diversions, with a diversion of about one kilometre, leads to the Wallenburg Tower with a great view and guesthouse (Attention: forest path! Not suitable for racing. Heavy gradients and slope!).
For more athletic cyclists, the Mommelstein lookout rock and the Adolfsquelle and Rennsteig border meadows can also be reached. Mountain bikers can also ride back through the forest to the Schmalkalden-Ehrental excursion area with its animal enclosure, restaurants and Barfuss-Erlebnis-Park. Both long-distance cyclists and hobby pedallers will find their own personal cycling mecca here.
Author’s recommendation
The cycle path leads directly past the old town of Schmalkalden. You should plan a detour to the lovingly restored half-timbered houses.
