From the town of Tolmin you first have to overcome a short ascent to the sunny village of Ljubinj from where you descend into the Baška grapa Valley and continue along the Bača River and later along the Idrijca River and the Soča River back to the town of Tolmin. In the village of Ljubinj you can decide to make an even more demanding ascent along the gravel road to the top of Mt. Senica which offers splendid views of the valley and the mountains and which also includes a popular climbing site at the eastern side of the mountain. Above the village of Podmelec you can stop and hike to the Sopota Waterfall which you reach after approximately 20 minutes of easy walking. This massive waterfall is falling more than 60 metres into the large pool. In the village of Podmelec you can visit the Church of the Assumption with interesting wall paintings. Beneath the village you can find the spring of Dicova voda with medicinal properties. In the village of Klavže you can visit the bridge leading to the railway station and take a look at the picturesque Bača Gorge. Continue along the regional road to the village of Most na Soči which basks in the sun on the terrace above the confluence of the rivers Soča and Idrijca. This village is regarded as one of the most important archaeological sites in the area of South-eastern Julian Alps and includes two themed trails: cultural-historical trail Čez Most po modrost and water-energetic trail Na Most po krepkost. The tour ends five kilometres from here in the city of Tolmin.

Author’s recommendation

Caution is advised because the trail is partially routed along regional roads. The section of the trail from the village of Klavže to the intersection in the village of Bača pri Modreju is especially dangerous because of the narrow road.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the town of Tolmin, follow the main road towards the city of Idrija and after approximately one kilometre turn towards the village of Poljubinj. Just behind the village you will face the only ascent of the tour which is not too steep and ends in the village of Ljubinj where you can choose to hike along the gravel road on your right which leads to the top of Mt. Senica or to continue straight ahead along the main road which slowly descends towards the small village of Hum and the village of Podmelec. On the left side of the road, just above the village of Podmelec, you will come across the sign for the Sopota Waterfall. Descend through the village of Podmelec to the village of Kneža where you turn to the right towards the town of Tolmin. In the village of Bača pri Modreju turn to the right and cycle to the village of Most na Soči where you follow the sign pointing to the right towards the town of Tolmin. Continue along the lake and along the Soča River all the way to the confluence of the rivers Soča and Tolminka (behind gravel parking lot on the left side of the road turn to the left down the gravel road) where you cross the footbridge and continue along the other bank of the Tolminka River to the centre of the town of Tolmin.
