Author’s recommendation

Kranjska Gora and Bovec are connected over the Vršič Pass by a mountain road with heavy traffic, so caution is needed. The trail is marked with blue signposts and markers indicating a mountain biking loop. We recommend using the Jalovec–Mangart and Krn Maps, issued by Planinska Zveza Slovenije (Alpine Association of Slovenia).

Safety information

The Slovenian Mountain Biking Trail runs along the paved mountain road Kranjska Gora–Vršič–Bovec and along narrow unpaved paths. Pay attention to various sections because you can miss them while riding fast on paved roads.

Warning: On the Tonkina koča–Poštarski dom na Vršiču section, cycling is prohibited from 1 March to 1 July. Cycling in this period can negatively impact the reproductive cycle of the western capercaillie and black grouse. Please consider this restriction.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Kranjska Gora continue north along the paved mountain road towards the Vršič Pass. Soon after passing Lake Jasna, turn left onto an unpaved road that takes you to the Velika Pišnica Valley. Below Prisojnik on the V Klinu pasture, turn right and ascend back to the Kranjska Gora–Vršič road, continue to the Mihov dom mountain hut, the Russian Chapel and the Koča na gozdu mountain hut up to the Tonkina koča mountain hut. Turn left and continue along the road to the Poštarski dom na Vršiču mountain hut, the highest point of the Juliana Bike trail. This is the border between Gorenjska and Primorska, an opening point to the valley of Trenta.

Descend past the Tičarjev dom mountain hut and the Kugy Monument to the turn for the Soča Spring and to the Koča pri izviru Soče mountain hut in Zadnja Trenta. Return along the same path and then follow the Soča River to Bovec. Visit the Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden, Tožbar Homestead and Triglav National Park info centre at Dom Trenta - Before the village of Soča, turn left towards Vrsnik and follow the Soča River mostly on its left bank. At Velika korita, turn left to the secluded Lepena Valley and climb to the Dom dr. Klementa Juga mountain hut. Return along the same path and continue along the Soča River to Čezsoča village or nearby Bovec.
