The trail on the slopes of Vogel, which is a very popular excursion destination in warm months of the year, offers magnificent views. And it is also not too hot in summer due to the high altitude.

The majestic character of the Julian Alps can be best felt right at the top of mount Vogel. At the trailhead, the view of Lake Bohinj and the Triglav mountain range inspire everyone. The hike is not demanding and mostly runs on the ski slopes and along the hiking trail. Info boards at the trailhead contain information about the flora and fauna of Vogel. The Dolga Planja archaeological site along the way presents and describes the archaeological specialities of the area.  There used to be a lodge here but only rectangular stone foundations have been preserved. The foundation used to carry the walls of horizontal wooden beams and a gable roof, probably covered with wooden shingles or bark. The interior was used to provide shelter in bad weather and store food and tools. Small items have been preserved in layers of soil - jewellery, tools and dishes.

Julian Alps:Bohinj Card offers free transport and other benefits.

Have a great meal in Ukanc, i.e. at Ukanc Pizzeria, or at Orlove glave Inn on Vogel and at Merjasec mountain hut, where you can also enjoy dishes with the Bohinjsko/From Bohinj certificate.

In the past, Ukanc was a grazing pasture. As the legend says, the name "Ukanc" was formed from the phrase "u konc" meaning "at the end of the world", because in the past people believed that the world ended below the walls of Komarča.

A military cemetery is located near the car park in Ukanc. You can visit graves and a chapel that reminds us about the atrocities of World War I.

Archaeological site on Vogel: More than 3500 years ago, people used to live, graze cattle or dig ore in the area of Vogel and the Julian Alps. This has been proven by an exceptional discovery, made by two amateur archaeologists (Janez Bizjak and Miran Bremšak) right along the ski slope on Vogel. The missing piece of history of settlements in the high mountain area proves that this part of the Julian Alps was also interesting in Iron Age. The archaeologists found the remains of the ore-bearing cave and settlements as well as some items, including a fibula from Iron Age. The high mountain world of the Julian Alps was populated from Bronze Age, in the Roman period and the Early Middle Ages, which has been confirmed by the newest archaeological findings on Pokljuka, in the Triglav mountain range, Komna and the South Bohinj Mountain Range.

Iron Trail on Vogel: The high mountain Iron Trail runs along the afore mentioned archaeological sites that have been characterised by a rich cultural and natural heritage. A part of the high mountain Iron Trail is also the trail from Vogel to Komna that runs along the newly found sites dating back to Bronze Age and the Early Middle Ages.

Upper station of Vogel cable car

Turn-by-turn directions

Continue from the upper station of Vogel cable car along the road that runs past the Merjasec mountain hut along the west side. Hike downhill towards Komna and Vogel. Along a wide unpaved road you soon come to a marked intersection. Continue left towards the Orlove glave four-seat ski lift (Komna, Vogel, Žagarjev graben and Ukanc are to the right). The path that is initially a transport rescue road starts ascending from the lower station of the ski lift. When you arrive to the upper station of Orlove glave ski lift, follow the signposts for Šija and after a short descent you arrive to Kratki plaz ski track. After approx. 300 metres, you will see info boards on the left side of the track. You will also see the Dolga planja archaeological site. Then you can walk along the ski track to the top of Šija ski lift. Just below the top, turn back towards Orlove glave and walk along the marked mountaineering trail towards the trailhead.
