Until recently, the existence of Castle Klanc (also known as New Gutenberg or Glanz) was only known to a handful of locals and rare experts on the medieval history. In the year 2022 however, the forgotten property of the famous Lamberg counts suddenly awoke from it's long slumber: with the removal of trees and undergrowth, the remaining castle walls became visible again, whilst the new information panels present its history to the visitors.

From the trailhead in the centre of the village Begunje na Gorenjskem, the trail follows the rustic village streets, passing by the parish church and the monumental Katzenstein mansion, right to the upper part of the village with a picturesque 18th  plaque column. The following section of the trail featues idyllic views of the mighty Kamen castle and the mountains above Draga valley. In the last section, the trail enters a forest an follows an old mountain trail to Mt. Dobrča. After a short and steep climb, the trail reaches the ruins of castle Klanec hidden on the edge of a forest.

Author’s recommendation

Don't miss the old plaque column in the crossroads next to the Starulč homestead. It's beautifully ornate with the portraits of village patron saints.

Safety information

The second part of the forest ascent (above the main road from Begunje to Tržič) can be slippery due to mud, especially after longer period of rain. The visit of castle ruins is safe, please do not climb on the remaining castle walls.

Tips and hints

  • if you don't have sufficient time to walk the entire trail, but would still like to see the castle ruins, you can shorten the hike ans start from the (unofficial) parking spot in Preska (where the main road Begunje - Tržič, the cart track from Kraljevo polje and the forest road to Dobrava plateau meet). However, please do not park you car elsewhere alongside the main road or on access roads and cart tracks used by local farmers.
  • in case you want to extend you walk, or you want to return to the trailhead in Begunje by a circular route: On the way the way back, look for the forest road branching of the main road in Preska (the point where the main road Begunje - Tržič, the cart track from Kraljevo polje and the forest road to Dobrava plateau meet). Follow the gravel forest road ascending towards south/south-west. After a short ascent, you will reach the top of a forested plateau named Dobrava. The road gradually starts descending and turns into a (sometimes muddy) cart track after a good kilometre. Keep walking further in the same direction using the cart track or the tiny trail on it's edge. Soon the cart track bends to the right and starts descending down towards the village Zgoša. Reaching a shrine (column) in the crossroads on the edge of the village you can : a) turn left and make a short visit to a nearby renaissance mansion Drnča (featuring a memorial plague to count Jacob Lamberg III. originating from castle Klanc), or b) turn right and return straight to Begunje passing by the primary school and village cemetery.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the trailhead (Tourist information centre) follow the pavement leading alongside a parking space and towards a small pub (A je to - Jurček pub). Continue walking on the pavement leading towards the village church of St. Urlich (on the right) and a mighty Katzenstein mansion (on the left). Passing by the historic buildings and reaching the crossroads by the mansion gate, turn right and descend down the village road leading to a small bridge and a river. Just before reaching the bridge, turn left and follow the narrow road running alongside the stream of Begunjščica river towards north-east. Soon the road ascends towards a large farm and crosses a mill brook (interesting rustic wooden aqueduct on your right hand side). Keep walking straight ahead, passing by a group of family homes, until reaching an open meadow with nice views. Reaching the first crossroads (next to an abandoned saw mill), turn right and climb up hill (a small WWII memorial plaque on your right hand side). You immediately find yourself in the second crossroads, ornated by a old plaque column from the year 1787. Take time for a closer look, it features four unbeautiful portraits of village patron saints: St. Ulrich, St. Peter, St. Lucy and Sacred Hearth.

Turn left by the shrine, then immediately to the right and continue the walk on a quiet paved road leading towards a group of up-market family houses with gardens. Soon the paved road turns into gravel road/cart track following a long hedge on the edge of the meadow named "Kraljevo polje" (English: The King's field).  Follow the cart track and enjoy breathtaking views of Castle Kamen: The old forts seems to be closed-in from both sides by sheer limestone walls, dotted by numerous caves and overhangs. In the background, am impressive view of Mt. Begunjščica and the Draga valley.

As you reach the corner at the far end of the meadow, the gravel road ascends up a short valley. Follow it, and within a few minutes of steady climb you will reach the main road between Begunje and Tržič. Cross the road carefully and look for the forest trail marked with red&white trail markings (official signposts of Slovenian alpine association). Climb up the (occasionally steep) trail leading up the forests of Mt. Dobrča. Soon the trail levels and you reach the junction of several log skidding tracks. Be attentive of the signpost on your right hand side, directing you towards the ruins of castle Klanc.

Descend straight down the forest and you will soon recognize the first remains of the vast castle complex. Try and locate all the locations with the help of the maps printed on the information panels. Start at the top (by the best preserved building, next to the main information board and wooden chairs) and gradually descend down towards the remains of the round defence tower. From here you can retrace your footsteps back to the waymarked trail, or simply descend down the meadow to the main road (Begunje - Tržič) and walk alongside the road back to Preska (the point where the main road Begunje - Tržič, the cart track from Kraljevo polje and the forest road to Dobrava plateau meet). From here, simply follow the same trail back to the trailhead in Begunje.
