The history of Kamna Gorica, village hidden deep in the Lipnica valley beneath the Jelovica plateau, is strongly marked by the centuries-old tradition of iron forging.  The trailhead of the Kamna Gorica scenic trail can be found in the new part of the village, from where it follows and old cart track leading to the nearby ridge. The path turns left, and leads into a beautiful "dry gorge" of conglomerate walls and monumental boulders. After a short ascent, the trail reaches the first view point, before returning back towards the village. The seconds ascent leads to a small forested plateau with a delightful viewpoint named Zjavka. From the top of this sheer rocky cliff, one can enjoy a wonderful view of the historic blacksmiths village centre and the valley below. On the northern side of the plateau another rocky crag (Ojstra peč) features the view towards the Sava river canyon and the majestic Karavanke mountains in the background.

Author’s recommendation

A wonderful view of the historic village centre of Kamna Gorica can also be enjoyed from the Holy trinity church . Look for the stairs, ascending up from the main village square.

Tips and hints

  • Extend the hike for a good half an hour, and visit the romantic ruins of the Lipnica Castle. Follow the signpost of The Lipnica Castle Trail, that you will find at the "Mil pogled" viewpoint, walk to the castle, than follow your footsteps back to this point.
  • Visit the Sexton's Museum House above Kamna Gorica, and learn about the interesting history of the village and the past life of it's inhabitants.
  • Kamna Gorica is not far from Kropa, another historic centre of blacksmith tradition. Visit the Iron Forging Museum, Fovšaritnica Museum House or a particularly interesting demonstration of traditional hand forging of nails in the Vigenc Vice Forge.

Turn-by-turn directions

Standing at the sports playground in the village Kamna Gorica, look for a dominant catholic shrine standing on the side off the main road that passes-by the village. Carefully cross the main road and approach the shrine, than continue walking further in the same direction. A quiet street you leads in-between well kept family houses and quickly reaches a group of small wooden holiday huts (Glamping Pr'Matic). Keep walking further in the same direction, as the paved street changes to a cart track leading on the edge of a forest meadow. Within few minutes, the cart track reaches a small saddle in the forest (shrine with a portrait of Virgin Mary, information panels).

Reaching the intersection of many trails on top of a saddle, turn left (signpost: Galerije, Pusti grad). Soon a trail (also used as a log skidding track) bends to the left and starts ascending. Pay attention to a narrow trail, branching of the the right hand side (signpost: Galerije, Pusti grad). Follow the trail leading to the right, cross the small footbridge and walk up the forest trail leading towards the large conglomerate rock boulders. You are now entering a fascinating dry "gorge" named "Galerije". The narrow path leads your right in-between the  conglomerate wall and giant boulders, which were once part of it. Lush vegetation, presence of wildlife and interesting rock formations contribute to the really unique atmosphere of this place. The path gradually ascends through the natural passages in the rocky wall and soon brings you to the top of a natural terrace above Lipnica valley. You suddenly find yourself in the cultivated land of fields, meadows and farm, which makes quite a contrast to the boulder strewn forest wilderness. Enjoy the wiev from the top of the cliff (locals call this place "Mil pogled", meaning something like "A pleasant sight"), than turn left on the forest road leading alongside the ridge. The road soon starts descending and brings you to a large meadow and turns  into cart track. Walk right across the meadow (towards Kamna Gorica), as more and more views of the valley and the historic village open before your eyes. Reaching the edge of the natural terrace (wonderful view of the Holy Trinity church above the village),  the cart track turns sharply to the left, descends down and brings you back to the start of the trail.

Climb up to the saddle with Mary's shrine once again, only this time, turn right where you will see a narrow footpath ascending into the forest. If you wish, you can climb up to the interesting rock formation named "Tomanov Vidovc" from here. It is believed, that the 19th century poet Lovro Toman, born in nearby Kamna Gorica, found the inspiration for his works sitting on top of this rock. The Kamna Gorica Scenic Trail however avoids the rock and leads alongside the ridge towards the west. Trail soon broadens and traverses the hillside above the pastures, until reaching a small forested plateau. Follow the trail leading through the forest on the left, and walk in the direction of the village. Just as it seems, that this trail will not be very generous with the views, you suddenly find yourself on top of a rocky crag named Zjavka. The narrow streets and water canals of Kamna Gorica can be admired from the birds eye view, whilst  Triglav and the Julian Alps tower high above the Lipnica valley. The edge of the cliff is quite sheer, therefore be attentive when hiking with small children.

After having breathing in the views, look for a tiny trail leading towards a wooden pavilion. Follow it, and it will soon bring you to a narrow forest road (log pulling track). Turn right and follow the track leading towards north-east. After about 5-10 minutes of walking, you approach the northern edge of the forested plateau. When you find yourself at the end of a forest road, look for a tiny trail branching off to the left (Signpost: Ojstra peč). Follow it, to reach another wonderful viewpoint named Ojstra peč. The views from here are a very different than at Zjavka: one can admire the untamed river Sava in the canyon down bellow, the Karawanke mountains and Kamnik Savinja Alps reign the northern horizon. The Slovenian name of the viewpoint Ojstra peč  (meaning: "sharp cliff") suggest this is another precipitous cliff. An indeed it is, therefore watch your step and keep an eye on the small children.

Continue the walk on the well beaten trail leading back east alongside the edge of the cliff. After about 5-10 minutes, you will find yourself back by the trail which you were using earlier (ascending up to towards the plateau). Turn right and traverse down the ridge back to the saddle with the shrine. Turn left getting there and follow your steps back down to the village.

Public transport

Public-transport-friendly

Arriva Bus company provides regular bus connections between Radovljica and Kamna Gorica. Since the buses are mainly used by school children and workers, they are more frequent in the morning and early afternoon. The nearest bus station to the trailhead is Kamna Gorica No.II (near the CoMetal factory), from where you walk aprox. 100 down the main road towards the centre of the village. Turn left by a large christian shrine on the left hand side of the road and walk up the quiet village street.

By road

Leave the A2 motorway at exits No. 4 (Radovljica) or No.3 (Lesce) and drive on the old regional road alongside the motorway. Look for the intersection right in- between Radovljica and Lesce (signpost: Kropa, Radovljica, Lesce) and drive towards a roundabout decorated by a metal sculpture. Drive straight true (take the second exit) and continue towards a railway underpass (signpost: Kropa). Turn left at the second roundabout (signpost: Kropa) and descend down towards river Sava. Cross the bridge and continue straight ahead (uphill) on the main road towards Lipnica Valley. Pass by the village Zgornje Lancovo and Lipnica and continue straight ahead on the main road towards Kropa. Reaaching Kamna Gorica, turn right at the second crossroads and follow the road leading into the village.

Parking

If you don't mind a bit longer walk, you can park at the parking space in front of the village (on the right hand side of the road). Otherwise look for a parking space near the sports playground or in front of the shop or post office.
