Remnants of the hard work and life of the miners, ironworkers and others, who were closely connected to the richest iron ore deposit in this area, can be seen and felt even today. The Old Mining Trail was used to transport iron ore from the Sava caves, a former iron ore deposit, to the blast furnaces in Stara Sava. A walk along the Old Mining Trail takes us into the past and shows us snippets from the everyday life of the people who mined and transported iron ore in this area.

Destination

Sava caves (Planina pod Golico)

Turn-by-turn directions

The trail starts at the museum area of Stara Sava in Jesenice. Elements of the former iron foundry settlement are still present there: the manor, which houses the museum with ironworks and mining collection, a church, a workhouse, a blast furnace with auxiliary facilities, water gates and a “koplern” (coal warehouse). The trail leads through Jesenice, past the old part of the Murova settlement with the Kos mansion, and further along the forest trail to the Pejce hamlet and through the villages of Prihodi and Planina pod Golico up to the Sava caves. There are several chapels and shrines along the trail, replicas of mining equipment, “glajžnje” (cart tracks) and an entryway into the mine.
