Uskovnica pasture lies west of Pokljuka and is separated from it by the Ribnica Brook.  For centuries, this pasture was the cornerstone of Bohinj alpine dairy farming, which is still active today. Konjščica pasture is located slightly higher, below Viševnik mountain, and a cheese dairy is still open there in summer.

Hike to the valley of Jezerce near Vodnikov dom mountain hut, and cross the long slope of Tosc that offers beautiful views of Bohinj. Near Vodnikov dom mountain hut you can enjoy in great views of Triglav and the surrounding mountains. The next stop is Koča na Doliču mountain hut that is located between Šmarjetna glava and Kanjavec. From there, continue ascending towards Hribarica, which is followed by a descend along the 8 km long Triglav Lakes Valley, which is considered one of the most beautiful parts of the Julian Alps. The valley was protected as a national park in 1924.  It is quite a dynamic terrain, there are interesting plants, animals and fossils. The valley is also well known for well-developed karst phenomena and tales about the mythical Zlatorog or Goldhorn. With its lakes and ponds, the valley is a true paradise for photographers. Although there are several lakes and ponds, the name Seven Triglav Lakes is most commonly used. The remaining lakes dry up multiple times during the year.

Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih hut is located at Dvojno jezero (Double Lake) below mount Tičarica. Visit Koča pod Bogatinom hut on Na Kraju pasture on Komna. A beautiful view opens up there and stretches to the peaks above Komna plateau.

Author’s recommendation

Prior to every hike, check the weather forecast and trail conditions.

Bathing or any other recreational activities are prohibited in Triglav lakes.  All garbage must be carried to the valley and not left on pastures.

Turn-by-turn directions

Start at Senožeta ski centre near Srednja vas and continue towards St Martin's Church and in the direction of Na Kresu viewpoint. Continue along a narrow asphalt road. Soon, you will reach a water storage tank where you can notice the signposts for Uskovnica. Continue along a cart track to the forest. When you exit the forest, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Rudnica and a part of the Upper Bohinj Valley. Continue along the cart track to the narrow passage and then transversally to the spot where you reach the road to Uskovnica. The road starts at a beautiful viewpoint Na Kresu, where you can enjoy the views of Srednja vas, the Upper Bohinj Valley and the South Bohinj Range in the background. Continue along the road and at the end of a left turn, the signposts for Uskovnica direct you right to a cart track through the forest, a small section of the forest with bushes and higher again through the forest. A few minutes later you soon reach an unpaved road and then continue on the walking path to Uskovnica. The cart track is soon divided and you have to continue along the left road and follow the signposts. Continue to the right and you will soon reach the steep slopes of an area named Za Ribnico (Ribnica is a brook flowing deep beneath you). You will soon come to a skidding trail and walk along it to the right. Continue to the right. In a small intersection, continue to the left, where you will soon see the signposts for Uskovnica. Ascend along the path and you will soon reach an unmarked path towards Lom.

Continue towards Uskovnica and in a few minutes you will come to an unpaved road which is closed for public transport) and continue to the right. Soon you will reach the road that also runs from Stara Fužina and Srednja vas over Lom pasture. Quite flat unpaved road soon brings you to the first houses on Uskovnica, a few metres after a water manger you leave this path and continue to the left in the direction of Koča na Uskovnici mountain hut. After 50-metre climb along the cart track you will soon reach Koča na Uskovnici mountain hut.

Continue north in the direction of Tosc, Draški vrh and Viševnik along the path that soon connects with the unpaved road to the right. The road then runs among hummocky meadows. You soon reach the intersection at the Chapel of Mary, Queen of Peace on Uskovnica.

To the left, you can continue to Vodnikov dom mountain hut, and to the right, the path runs to Pokljuka. You continue straight on towards Konjščica pasture (one of the paths along which you can also come to Velo polje or Vodnikov dom mountain hut). Continue among the fenced pastures on a steep cart track where you can enjoy in the view of the surrounding mountains. You soon come to a wide cart track from Pokljuka or near the bridge over Ribnica (Uskovnica - Razpotje starting point) towards Konjščica pasture.

You can soon enjoy the view of Viševnik, the cart track then ascends transversally and mostly through the forest. Soon you will cross a fence and come to the youth-west edge of Konjščica pasture. The road here flattens and leads you transversally across the pasture. Along the trail, you cross several small brooks and soon you come to a large brook and after crossing it you soon reach the cheese dairy on Konjščica pasture, where dairy products can be bought during grazing season.

Continue on a flat meadow to the other side of the pasture. The trail starts ascending there. In the last section of the ascent, the road from Rudno polje runs from the right. Then you have to ascend along the torrent to reach the flat meadow of the valley of Jezerce. The trail turns to the left and after a few steps brings you to the main part of Triglav National Park. Continue ascending along a spring towards Studorski preval. Cross a torrent and then go to the right to reach meadowy areas. The trail transversally ascends to Studorski preval, where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Bohinj side. The trail the descends and crosses the slopes of Veliki Draški vrh and Tosc with a few ascents and descents. Soon you reach the grassy south slope of Tosc. To the right you can see an unmarked path to Tosc, after a few metres the path from Uskovnica comes from the left. Continue straightforward and the road continues crossing the slopes of Tosc. In a slight descent you cross a short section of a forest and then you reach steep slopes. Continue on a wide shelf in the rocks. Since the path is quite wide, this will not cause any problems (be careful because of the falling rocks and rock slides). The path ascends and brings you to the intersection where you can turn right and continue to Vodnikov dom mountain hut. You can soon see mount Triglav. The path continues below the slopes of Tosc and after crossing a few screes you reach Vodnikov dom mountain hut on Velo polje.

The mountain hut is a great panoramic point to view Triglav mountain and the surrounding peaks. The west slopes of Tosc rise on the east side of the mountain hut, Velo polje stretches to the south and west side of the hut, and the view reaches Prevalski STog to the south and Mišelj vrh on the west. Dom Planika mountain hut is visible on the plateau below Triglav, and Vernar rises north-east of the hut.

Turn left from Vodnikov dom mountain hut towards Velo polje pasture. Continue slightly to the right along the trail that crosses the vast pasture. On the other side of the pasture you soon reach stone walls that prevent torrents to fill up this wonderful pasture. Only a few metres before the mentioned stone wall the path turns to the left and ascends to a larch forest. The trail then turns to the left and brings you on grassy slopes to the mentioned torrent. Continue along the torrent and to the walls of Šmarjetna glava. The steep slope flattens and a rocky trail leads you below the screes of surrounding peaks to Dolič pass. Continue straight on (Hribarice to the left, Planika to the right) along the trail that starts descending soon and brings you after 10 minutes to Koča na Doliču mountain hut.

The hut offers a view to north-west of the mountains above the valley of Zadnjice and Trenta. You can see the vast steep walls of mount Triglav on the north-west side, which fall in the valley of Zadnjice, across which you can follow the former Italian cargo trail. The walls of Vršac are on the left and the walls of Pihavec to the right, Bavški Grintavec, Pelci and Jalovec mountains rise in the background, the view of Triglav to the north is covered by Triglavski podi. Razor and Prisojnik mountains are to the left.

The trail ascends along a scree from Dolič pass, where you turn towards Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih mountain hut in the intersection. Continue to Čez Hribarice pass and cross the Hribarice plateau. There are two crossroads on the vast area of Hribarice, continue straight on in both crossroads (Kanjavec on the right). Descend across the screes and reach the intersection where signposts direct you towards Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih mountain hut. Soon you reach one of the mentioned Triglav Lakes, Zeleno jezero or Green Lake. Continue on a flat path to the next lake, Jezero v Ledvicah or Veliko jezero (Grand Lake). The panoramic trail leads you along the picturesque Triglav Lakes Valley. In continuation you cross a section of larch forest. Follow the signposts for Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih mountain hut. Continue to the Dom na Komni mountain hut by turning right before Dvojno jezero lake. The trail descends moderately and ascends in some sections. When the forest ends, you come to Lopučnica pasture with a marked intersection, where you can turn slightly to the left. You again have to make a few ascents and descents through the forest. Continue to the abandoned pasture Na Kalu. Then you slightly ascend to the panoramic small pass where the path turns left and slowly starts descending and brings you to the abandoned Razor pasture. Continue to the intersection and turn right towards Koča pod Bogatinom mountain hut, which is only a short moderately flat section of path away.

The Komna plateau is surrounded with high mountains like an amphitheatre. Thus, the mountain hut provides a beautiful view of the mountains and peaks around the plateau. You can see the edge of the plateau to the east, and the South Bohinj Range to the south. The peaks of Podrta gora, Tolminski Kuk, Mahavšček (Veliki Bogatin) and Bogatin can be viewed. The Vratca pass (Bogatinsko sedlo) is north of Bogatin, and rises above the Gracija valley. Above it you can see Srednji vrh mountain from the Lanževica massive; the view of the northern side is covered by the edge of the Na Kraju pasture, where the trail to the Triglav Lakes Valley runs.

You can reach Koča pod Bogatinom mountain hut along a flat path with views of Bogatin and Mahavšček in 15 minutes. Continue to the valley and turn left to Koča pri Savici lodge or make a short stop at Dom na Komni mountain hut, which is only a few minutes from the intersection away. 66 bends must be walked to Koča pri Savici lodge, whereas 48 bends are in the last section of the trail. Walk along a wide mule track. You will also see a turn to the path that runs to Črno jezero lake. The trail descends gradually and takes you past a small artificial cave and to the forest. Soon you arrive to a small valley called Pekel (Hell). At the end of the valley, the trail starts descending and after 48 bends brings you to Koča pri Savici lodge.  (Source:
