Lake Bohinj is a tectonic and the largest natural lake in the Triglav National Park and in Slovenia. The basin of the lake was transformed by the Bohinj glacier. The main tributary to the lake is Savica which springs in the Triglav Lakes Valley. The water in the lake changes three times in a year. Jezernica is the small river flowing from the lake and is one of the shortest rivers in Slovenia. Below the confluence with the Mostnica River, the Mostnica and the Jezernica merge into the Sava Bohinjka River.

The Church of St John the Baptist is the most recognisable symbol of Bohinj. It was built before the year 1300 and is, from a stylistic point of view, the richest building in Bohinj.

During heavy rainfall, the Govic Waterfall occasionally bursts out from the rock above the northern shore of Lake Bohinj. The water rises vertically in the cave and falls with a roar into the channel below the wall. The path is impassable at that time. The entrance to the cave is only a few metres wide and runs down to the underground lake with a very oscillating surface. Usually, the waterfall can be seen for only a few hours.

Stop and relax at various restaurants in Ukanc and Ribčev Laz. Picerija Ukanc in Ukanc, Lovec and Zlatovčica Restaurants and Foksner Snack Bar in Ribčev Laz offer dishes with the Bohinjsko/From Bohinj certificate.

During the International Wild Flower Festival (end of May, start of June) you can join a guided hike (with a botanist) along lake shore, where you can get detailed information about the flora of this area.

In the past, Ukanc was a grazing pasture. As the legend says, the name "Ukanc" was formed from the phrase "u konc" meaning "at the end of the world", because in the past people believed that the world ended below the walls of Komarča.

A military cemetery is located near the car park in Ukanc. You can visit graves and a chapel that reminds us about the atrocities of World War I.

Zlatorog Fairy Trail is located along the trail around Lake Bohinj. You can walk an hour or the whole day along the approximately 2 kilometres long circular trail. The circular trail can be visited individually or in an organised group. The perfect guide is the booklet containing fairy tales from Bohinj, a map and slots for stamps that you can collect along the trail.

The Church of the Holy Ghost was built in the 16th century in Baroque style. Its exterior has a painting of St Christoph (patron of drivers). The shape of its roof is connected to a legend. When there were major floods, the people of Bohinj asked the church authorities for advice how to get rid of that pest. They took their advice and built a church in the shape of a camel that will drink all the water. Thus, the roof has a camel back shape.

Turn-by-turn directions

Walking on the unpaved path along the south shore of Lake Bohinj is perfect for an easy family stroll or even for some alone time in nature. Start at TIC Bohinj in Ribčev Laz and walk left towards Jezero HOtel, continue past the Pod skalco park to the Pod skalco event place. At the end of the car park, follow the unpaved path (hunters’ trail runs to the left side uphill) that runs parallel to the main road. The Church of the Holy Ghost is located approximately half-way to the end of the trail. When you arrive at Ukanc, turn right in the intersection (the lower station of Vogel cable car is to the left and the road to the Savica Waterfall is straight ahead) and continue to the bridge, where you can see the turqouise green pools of the Savica. In a few metres turn to the unpaved path to the right. You can see a part of the Zlatorog Fairy Trail along the trail. At the crossroads at the last houses, turn left and continue along the narrow path along the western lake shore. The meadows along the west bank were used by the farmers, but today, they are quite overgrown and only scarcely can we hear cows’ bells ring. You can return along the northern lake shore. When returning, you cross various screes that slowly but persistently cover the lake basin. Cross the dry riverbed of Govic which can be unpassable after a longer rainy period. Continue to the former hatchery. There the path expands and takes you to the Vogar foothills, and on the meadow along the eastern shore of the lake you can also observe paragliders who land there after flying from the hills nearby. When you reach the car park, continue straight ahead along the asphalt road to the Church of St John the Baptist and the bridge over the Jezernica. Turn left and reach the starting point.
