Vodnikov dom na Velem polju mountain hut is located on a small terrace below the west slope of Tosc above Velo polje and is a great starting point for hikes to the surrounding peaks. Initially, Vodnikova koča mountain hut was built in 1895, and in 1909 it was relocated to its current location, where it stands beside a new larger hut from 1958.

From Vodnikov dom mountain hut you can cross the slopes of Tosc to Studorski preval between Ablanca (Sleme) and Veliki Draški vrh. From the pass, you can see the Bohinj area and a small valley of Jezerce. The Konjščica pasture is located between Viševnik and the ridge of Sleme with its highest peak, Ablanca. A cheese dairy and some other lodges stand in the main part of the pasture.

Uskovnica pasture lies west of Pokljuka and is separated from it by the Ribnica Brook.  For centuries, Uskovnica was the main point of alpine dairy farming in Bohinj. Today, cattle still graze there and dairy products are produced, numerous small lodges and their exterior still preserve shepherd tradition.

Author’s recommendation

Turn-by-turn directions

At the car park at the end of the village the signposts for the gorge and Mostnica Waterfall direct you to the right and the wide path along which you soon reach Hudičev most bridge. Continue straightforward (the path across the bridge to the right takes you to Uskovnica via Blatca pasture), at the info board turn right. You arrive to the Mostnica Gorge entry point (payable). Continue to the right. Both paths run near the gorge (the turn to view the elephant is along the path to the right) and quite soon merge into one trail, along which you can ascend to the stone road. Follow the road to the right to come to Planinska koča na Vojah mountain hut.

From the hut, continue along a flat unpaved road that runs along the edge of the extensive pastures on Voje pasture. The road soon divides in two parts and you continue along the left side (to Velo polje) or along a slightly longer right side of the road that brings you to the Mostnica Waterfall.

After visiting the waterfall, you can go back a few metres and then cross a little bridge to the “left” and slightly shorter path. The trail (skidding trail) enters a forest and continues upwards above the waterfall, then gradually turn to the left and ascend along steep slopes. After an approximately one hour ascent through the forest the trail turns to the right and after a few minutes of ascend, you come to a forest on the Spodnja Grintovica pasture, where you can find a water manger. The trail was transformed into a cart track in the past few years, because it runs on the area of tree cutting due to the damage caused by bark beetles. The path goes through the forest where a steep ascent begins. Soon, you come to a small valley (Jurjevčeva vrtača) below Jezerski Stog mountain, where the valley becomes flat. The path then turns to the right and after a few minutes’ walk, you arrive to a poorly marked intersection. Continue along the path on the right side (you can see the pastures under Mišelj vrh, Malo polje and Velo polje on the left), which starts ascending. Continue ascending along a ridge of the Na Zagonu mountain (1,824 m), then the path reaches a flat area and brings you to the path from the Pokljuka plateau. Continue to the left in the direction of Vodnikov dom mountain hut and walk along a gently sloping path across the slopes of Tosc. The trail crosses a few small screes (in early summer, snowy areas are still possible) and continue towards Vodnikov dom mountain hut on Velo polje.

The mountain hut is a great panoramic point to view Triglav mountain and the surrounding peaks. The west slopes of Tosc rise on the east side of the mountain hut, Velo polje stretches to the south and west side of the hut, and the view reaches Prevalski STog to the south and Mišelj vrh on the west. The north-west view reaches Šmarjetna glava and Kanjavec, when gazing to toe north, you can see Triglav. Dom Planika mountain hut is visible on the plateau below Triglav, and Vernar rises north-east of the hut.

Return in the same way but follow the signposts that lead you to Studorski preval and Rudno polje. In the beginning, the trail crosses the west and south slopes of Tosc. When you arrive to Studorski preval, you descend to the valley of Jezerce (Ablanca on the right and Veliki Draški vrh on the left). From the valley continue to Konjščica valley and be careful to turn right in the intersection. A cheese dairy and some other lodges stand in the main part of the pasture. Continue and follow the signposts for Uskovnica pasture. The trail runs along a cart track that is slightly steep in some parts. Walk across fenced pastures and admire the surrounding mountains. After a few hundred metres you soon reach the chapel of Mary, the Queen of Peace on Uskovnica. Follow the signposts for Stara Fužina. Continue across the hummocky meadows that are quite rare in this part of the Julian Alps. The unpaved road soon brings you to a intersection, where you turn left and the road becomes narrower and you finally reach Koča na Uskovnici mountain hut. Continue along the road and turn left in the first intersection. While hiking, you pass a few alpine lodges and in the next intersection turn right, continue along the unpaved road and in the next intersection turn left. Continue along the road where a narrow path runs towards the Voje Valley and Stara Fužina. The trail runs mostly through the forest and brings you to the Voje pasture. Continue right in the intersection towards the Mostnica Waterfall, when you come to the waterfall, turn left and descend to the starting point. (Source: www.hribi.net)
