Galetovec offers nice views from the top of a rocky cliff above Bohinjska Bela. It’s popular choice for hikers who like to go off the beaten track and who are fit enough for vigorous exercise.

Galetovec is an indistinct peak of the Pokljuka plateau but is a popular choice for a short or a longer trip, due to its several-hundred-metre high cliff, rather easy access from different directions, and magnificent vistas from the top. The vista opens up suddenly and one can see all the way to Jesenice in one direction and almost to Kranj in the other. On the right, there is a range of the Bohinj mountains, deep below you can see both Bohinjska Bela and Bled, and looking across there is the vertical cliff of Babji zob continuing to the forests of Jelovica. The breathtaking vista ends with the vast Karavanke range and the Kamnik mountains. Galetovec is also a popular choice in winter when locals organise a guided hike in February.

Safety information

  • At first the trail is marked with signposts for Bled hiking trails and is mostly a marked mountain path.
  •  The trail partially goes through the forest where you can occasionally stumble on fallen trees.
  • The top is situated on a high cliff, so you are advised against walking near the edge.
  • There are no huts on the way so you should bring along enough water and food with you.
  • You are advised not to hike to the top if the path has icy stretches or is snowcapped.

Destination

Heart of the village of Bohinjska Bela (488m).

Turn-by-turn directions

BOHINJSKA BELA - SLAMNIKI - GALETOVEC - PLANINA ZA JAMO - BOHINJSKA BELA

From the starting point turn left and follow the signposts along the village roads to the Iglica climbing area (the rocky slope above the highest part of the village). Via Iglica there is a secured trail almost vertically ascending the narrow stretch beneath Iglica. When you climb to the top, take the path to the right to the nearby Brezje settlement at the end of the forest. From here take the paved road and stick to the left side, soon arriving above the settlement. Continue on the road from the end of the settlement leading to a junction where you turn right. The forest road will take you a bit higher to the lower parts of Slamniki. At this point, go past a hut on the left and then continue to the crossroads, where you turn left in the direction of Galetovec and Slamniki (on the right you will see the Rčitno mountain pasture). The path passes a forest area and takes you to the Slamniki viewpoints, where there are several huts. The path continues through the forest to a smaller junction where you turn right. You will soon get off of this path, as the less visible signposts will take you left into the forest. The trail begins to steeply ascend through the forest. You will have to climb across fallen trees. Somewhat higher the trail joins with a wooden road and you will continue to go to the left. After a few minutes of walking along the road, you will see a crossroads where you will turn left in the direction of Galetovec. Get off of the road following the signposts for Galetovec – across a grassland, at first downwards and then upwards. The path continues its way through the forest until the last few metres below the peak, where stunning vistas emerge.

Descend over a grassland to a pasture and take the trail downwards left of the hut leading to the Planina za Jamo along the trail of its leftmost edge until the end and then on to a wooden road downwards to the crossroads. Here, make a sharp right turn and continue on the road all the way to the Podklanec settlement at Bohinjska Bela, from where you continue on a paved road leading to the community centre.
