The stage starts in the centre of Cave del Predil and passes the buildings of the lead mine and the museum, along the regulated excavated material dams. Cave del Predil is not a very interesting town, but in the past, it was the centre of the Tarvisio Valley due to its lead mine. Cave del Predil is connected with Log pod Mangartom via the waste water channel. Many workers from the Soča Valley walked through this channel to Cave del Predil to work in the mine. When the mine was closed, the channel was abandoned, too. It is currently pending opening for tourist reasons. The road runs past Tarvisio, which is the largest Italian city in this three-border area. The route runs past small villages to asphalt cycling route Tarvisio – Kranjska Gora, which takes us to the winter and summer tourist centre of Kranjska Gora, and continues past the Planica and Tamar Valley with the Nordic centre and ski jumps, past the spring of the Sava Dolinka River (Zelenci) and past the Podkoren ski centre, where world cup races are organised every year.

Author’s recommendation

The stage is long, therefore, you need to bring enough water and lunch.

Turn-by-turn directions

The trail runs along the cycling and hiking route between both places.

From Cave del Predil we hike towards the lead mine and the museum. Before entering the mine we turn right and continue across the regulated dam. After approx. 1.5 km we descend across the bridge over Rio del Lago to the main road from Cave del Predil to Tarvisio. We continue along the left side and after approx. 4 kilometres we turn right along the asphalt road towards Rute Picolo and past the village of Ortigara, Val Romana Superiore, Ortigara and Val Romana Inferiore, i.e. along a steep and narrow cart road to the cycling route Tarvisio – Rateče – Kranjska Gora. We continue approximately 8 kilometres along this route to the Slovenia/Italy state border in Rateče. After border crossing we turn sharp left and across the main road from Tarvisio to Kranjska Gora and Rateče. At the end of the village, we continue across the mentioned main road to the asphalt local road that runs along the Sava Dolinka spring (Zelenci), past the Podkoren ski centre or past the Kranjska Gora cycling park to the centre of Kranjska Gora. Kranjska Gora is well known for alpine ski world cup competitions and the nearby ski jumps in Planica.
