This stage runs from Cave del Predil across the dams and along the road towards Tarvisio. Before the town, the trail runs through Rute towards Rateče border crossing and Kranjska Gora.
The stage starts in the centre of Cave del Predil and passes the buildings of the lead mine and the museum, along the regulated excavated material dams. Cave del Predil is not a very interesting town, but in the past, it was the centre of the Tarvisio Valley due to its lead mine. Cave del Predil is connected with Log pod Mangartom via the waste water channel. Many workers from the Soča Valley walked through this channel to Cave del Predil to work in the mine. When the mine was closed, the channel was abandoned, too. It is currently pending opening for tourist reasons. The road runs past Tarvisio, which is the largest Italian city in this three-border area. The route runs past small villages to asphalt cycling route Tarvisio – Kranjska Gora, which takes us to the winter and summer tourist centre of Kranjska Gora, and continues past the Planica and Tamar Valley with the Nordic centre and ski jumps, past the spring of the Sava Dolinka River (Zelenci) and past the Podkoren ski centre, where world cup races are organised every year.
The stage is long, therefore, you need to bring enough water and lunch.
Normal level of caution is recommended, there are no special dangers along the way. In winter or in snow the trail is impassable.
Hiking equipment suitable for the season.
Hint by Triglav National Park: Zelenci nature reserve
In 1992, the area of Zelenci has been proclaimed a nature reserve by way of a Decree of the Municipality of Jesenice. The reserve is home to a wide range of interesting plants, including the carnivorous sundews, while the fauna is dominated by amphibians and bird breeders.
The westernmost part of the reserve is taken up by the emerald-green tarn. Groundwater seeps through the permeable floor of Lake Kreda, stirring up the silt and bubbling to the surface like small volcanoes, which is a unique case in Slovenia.
The water with its many crystal-clear and cool springs has a permanent temperature of 6 degrees Celsius. Special wooden bridges take visitors safely to the lake and around its marshy surroundings.
