Today, the ridge of Mt. Kolovrat, which was the crucial area for the breakthrough at the Isonzo front 100 years ago, offers peace, silence and dramatic views of the Julian Alps to the north and Adriatic Sea to the south.

The author believes that the trail along this easily accessible and technically completely undemanding ridge of Mt. Kolovrat (road) undoubtedly represents the finest panoramic hiking trail of the Soča Valley. You can divide the hike into several parts, e.g. one day to visit the outdoor museum, one day for the hike along the ridge, and one day for the hike to its highest peak called Kuk. It is also possible to make the entire trail in one day – hike in both directions is more than 8 km long.

The trail starts at the unmistakable parking lot beneath the outdoor museum. You should certainly set aside more time to visit the museum, however, due to the several-kilometre-long trail in front of you, you should first head along the restored trenches and caverns to the first peak called Na gradu. Here, you can finally enjoy in magnificent views of the Julian Alps to the north and to the Adriatic Sea to the south which will follow you along the entire ridge.

From the first peak, you descend along the trenches back to the ruins of the buildings of the former Yugoslav army and continue to the peak called Trinški vrh. Directions from here are simple: Continue following the trail in the ridge area, up-and-down the mounds, past the Zanuso Bivouac to Mt. Nagnoj and to the end of the trail where you arrive to the road taking you to the main road which you have to cross and continue along the supply road all the way to the large transmitter on the top of the highest peak called Kuk.

To avoid returning entirely along the same trail, you should return along the road on the Italian side of the mountain. This route is especially pleasant in sunny evenings during the colourful autumn or cold winter months. Follow the road to the last descent towards the Solarje Mountain pass. and ascend back to the ridge which you follow back to the parking lot.

Author’s recommendation

In nice weather, the trail along the ridge of Mt. Kolovrat represents a tour for the soul, a hike to fill up your batteries, and a place where you can go when you want to get rid of your bad mood and negative mindset. It is magical throughout the entire year and perhaps especially in winter days when there are less visitors. Mt. Kolovrat is one of the most convenient points to admire the colourful sunsets – no two sunsets are alike.

Safety information

This trail is easy and directions are simple, however, the entire tour is routed at an altitude above 1000 m, which is why you have to wear season appropriate footwear and clothing. The tour is distinguished by exceptional views, which is why it does not make any sense taking it in bad weather.

Destination

You can end the tour at any point. The most distant point of the tour is the highest peak of the ridge called Kuk. You always return to the starting point.

Turn-by-turn directions

This trail starts at the parking lot beneath the outdoor museum. First of all, it ascends through the restored old trenches and caverns to the first peak called Na gradu and then descends through the trenches to the small valley between the peaks called Na gradu and Trinški vrh to the ruins of the buildings of the former Yugoslav border army. On the other side, a short ascent takes you to the sightseeing peak called Trinški vrh. Initially, you follow the trail along the entire ridge of Mt. Kolovrat and ascend across the harvested meadows to the next somewhat higher hill. From here, you descend back to the mountain pass and to the road on the Italian side of the mountain – the Zanuso Bivouac is located just beneath the road. You can continue along this road, however, a more favourable version first takes you along an initially steep and later gradually more comfortable footpath to the next hill and along the ridge to the peak called Nagnoj. The trail continues along the ridge and soon descends to a gravel road which takes you to the main road routed on the Slovenian side of the mountain across the entire Mt. Kolovrat and which connects the Soča region with the Goriška Brda region. On the other side of the road you continue along the access road leading to the transmitter on top of the peak called Kuk which is the highest point of the ridge.

On the return, you can avoid all peaks you already visited along the trail to the peak called Kuk by returning on the Italian side of the mountain which is always sunny and especially beautiful during sunsets. Follow the road past the Zanuso Bivouac to the last descent towards the Solarje Mountain pass where you leave the road and return to the starting point along the ridge of the peak called Trinški vrh.

Public transport

There is no regular public transportation available to Mt. Kolovrat. The most convenient way is to visit Mt. Kolovrat by car: from the town of Tolmin (15 km) or from the village of Idrsko through the village of Livek (23 km).

During the summer time there is a shuttle bus from Kobarid: https://www.soca-valley.com/en/soca-valley/getting-here-and-around/public-transport/ -  for time table take a look to Hop-ON Hop-OFF KOBARID.

Getting there

Turn from the main road Tolmin-Kobarid 300 m after the roundabout at the sign for Mt. Kolovrat. Continue through the village of Volče and along the only road through the Kamnica Valley to the ridge where the road turns towards the former border crossing Solarje and the Brda region. Here, turn right to the top of the slope and to the parking lot beneath the World War I Outdoor museum.

Parking

Parking lot beneath the outdoor museum is large enough for temporary needs. If the parking lot is full, you can park 100 m back.
