Suharna is a viewpoint on the edge of the Jelovica plateau. From the viewpoint there are excellent views of the surrounding countryside that encircles the area from Žirovnica via Radovljica to Brezje and onwards along the Ljubljana basin towards Kranj. The Lipnica valley sits right beneath the viewpoint, while to the north there are far-reaching views of the Karavanke and Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

It takes around an hour to reach the Suharna viewpoint on foot on the trail leading through the forest. There is a small parking area in the hamlet of Kolnica in the village of Spodnja Lipnica just before the bridge over the Lipnica stream. This is also the start point for the Grabnarca Waterside Nature Trail. To reach Suharna first set off on the forest road, which soon becomes a cart track, from where you can get your first glimpse of the peaks of the Karavanke mountains. The trail rises on a constant incline then somewhat higher it leads to the right. The cart track then becomes a narrow trail, from where there are views of the Lipnica valley. After around 50 minutes the trail, which is fairly steep in a few places, leads to a wider forest trail. Turn left and then right – as indicated by the trail marker – upwards. After a further 10 minute walk you arrive on a plateau then continue to the right for a few minutes to reach the viewpoint. Take the same trail back to the start.

Author’s recommendation

The hike to Suharna view point can be wonderfully extended with the visit of the nearby source of Lipnica stream.

- Returning back to the parking area, turn sharply to the left and follow a narrow trail running parallel with the Lipnica stream. In less than 10 minutes you will reach the pristine source of Lipnica river.

Public transport

There are no public buses directly to Kolnica Hamlet. The nearest Bus station can be found in Spodnja Lipnica (800 meters, 5-10 minutes walk). Alternatively you can start the walk in front of the Mercator shop in Lancovo (Bus station) and follow the Grabnarica waterside natural trail to Kolnica.

Getting there

Leave the A2 motorway (Ljubljana - Karavanke tunnel)  at the exit 4 (Radovljica) or exit 3 (Lesce), then take the turning towards Kropa at the roundabout in Lesce. The road descends to the Sava river, crosses the river, then winds its way up towards the Lipnica valley. On reaching the valley continue past the newer part of the village of Lancovo, then turn right at the sign opposite the Krona bar towards the Jelovica plateau. Drive through the village and continue to the hamlet of Kolnica.

Parking

There is a small parking area on the left-hand side of the road, just before the bridge and the first house.
