The Grabnarica and Lipnica streams once powered a number of mills and sawmills.  A walk along The Grabnarca waterside Nature Trail reveals the importance of water for the local population, both in the past and today. The circular path leads through an area which is known for its exceptionally diverse flora and fauna, including rare stone crayfish and, the symbol of the trail: the white-throated dipper.

The trail leads from village Lancovo, to the impressive source of Lipnica stream. From here, the waterside path follows the Grabnarica brook. Leaping from one side of the stream to the other (across numerous wooden footbridges),  the trail reaches a scenic fish-pond named "Count's Lake'. The second part of the walk runs through the wide open pastures and hay meadows of village Vošče, with delightful views of the Karavanke mountains and the Julian Alps.

Author’s recommendation

The Grabnarca trail is a natural extension of The Lipnica Castle Natural Science Trail, therfore both trails can be wonderfully combined.
Some of the wooden bridges across Grabnarca tilt in places and parts of the bridge railings are missing in places, and/or wooden planks have been dislodged, but they cn all be crossed safely.

Turn-by-turn directions

After parking the car (or. exiting the bus) outside the Cultural centre in Lancovo, look for the information panel with the map of The Grabnarca Waterside Nature Trail. It is located by the tall linden trees at the southeren end of the parking space (where the road enters the village).

From there, follow the main (two lane road) into the Lipnica valley in direction of  south/south east. After 100 meters, a road branches of to the right hand side (signpost: Brda, Vošče). Walk past the wooden catholic shrine, and start ascending on the quiet village road towards a private house. Reaching the house, you will meet another access road leading up from the main road from the left, and another one - invinting  you into the valley on your right hand side. Ignore both, and continue walking straight ahead (passing the house). The paved road now gradually ascends into the forest of tall beach trees. As the road levels, you are greeted by a meadow and an isolated farmhouse on your left-hand side. Walk straight ahead, ignoring the driveway to the house and the cart track leading towards the left. Reaching an intersection, continue straight ahead (passing a large open storage). Reaching the house on the edge of the plateau, roads branch off to both left and right hand side. Continue straight ahead (on hardly visible road) which descends into the dense forest. As the road makes a slight right turn, look for the tiny path amidst young beech trees  descending straight down to the river. Follow this narrow trail trough dense undergrowth all the way down to the bridge near a garage. You will find yourself in a village street of Kolnica, hamlet of Spodnja Lipnica village.

Turn left, and follow the road for about 50 meters to reach the bridge across Lipnica stream.

You have reached the second starting point of The Grabnarca Waterside Nature Trail, marked with an information panel and small park. Turn right and continue walking on a gravel road for about 10 meters, then, before the gravel road turns left, you turn right into the forest. Follow (at first) hardly visible path into the riverside forest. If you can see the river on your right, and an abandoned sandpit on your left - you are on the right trail. The trail soon starts ascending above the river, using wooden stairs. The path soon levels, and than gently descends towards the springs of Lipnica stream. Walk across the foot bridge towards the gravel cart track above the main spring. Follow the cart track  which descends back down to the gravel forest road at the end of the village.

Turn left, and follow the road for about 20 meters, than you will meet a narrow forest trail branching off to the right hand-side (marked with a signpost "Grabnarca- potok poln življenja"). Only after few meters, you will come across the first foot bridge. Walk across the bridge, followed by the second one only few steps further. The path than follows the Grabnarica brook upstream, at first on the opposite side to the forest road- than (after the third bridge) on the same side. Path continues on rough gravel forestry track and leads to (sometimes muddy) riverside meadow.

At the end of the clearance the trail returns to the right hand side of the river, and follows the stream through the forest. A long narrow bridge brings you back to the left hand side of the river through the marshy forest.

Passing by the abandoned water mill, the trail continues ascending upstream, first on the left - later on the right hand side ot the river, until reaching the scenic "Count's lake" - a large fish-pond beneath the village Vošče. Walk pass the lake on the left hand side, continue for another 80 meters, than turn sharply to the right (signpost: Vodna učna pot Grabnarca) and continue walking on a cart track ascending to the village. Reaching the first houses in Vošče, continue straight ahead to the crossroads in the middle of the village (catholic shrine). Follow the road ascending to the left, which brings you to a small beech tree forest above the Grabnarica brook (recently expanded road). Forest soon ends, and the road now ascends through orchards and meadows to the settlement "Na hribu" (On the hill).

Where the road makes a significant left turn in the middle of the village, continue straight ahead (passing the yellow facade house on the right) to a cart track ascending up the meadow. The cart track leads straight ahead across the meadow strewn with hay-racks towards a toll hunters lookout. The path crosses a gravel road (drive way to the farm on the right hand side) and continues straight ahead across the meadows with wonderful views of Pusti grad Castle and the Karavanke mountains.

Before the isolated farm in front of you (named "Fortuna"), turn left on a cart track descending diagonally beneath the farm. The cart track joins with a gravel road at the bottom of the natural terrace (turn right),  which than soon joins with the asphalt road. Turn left and return to Lancovo via already known road.
