Dobrča is a mighty forested mountain, raising high above the plains between Tržič and Begunje. Due to it's solitary position in between the Karavanke range and Kamnik-Savinja Alps (and former hay meadows on it's southern slopes) it truly offers lush views on every corner of the beautiful Gorenjska region.

The trailhead of the southern Dobrča approach lies above Zadnja vas village¸, which can be reached by the panoramic road from village Begunje to the market town Tržič. For a short while the trail follows the gravel road, than it quickly finds it's way up the mountain through the (predominatly beech) forest. Higher up, the forest opens and the popular Dobrča mountain hut greets us from above.

Antoher half an hour walk awaits us, before we reach the 1634 meters high peak of Mt. Dobrča. Since the very top of the mountain is overgrown with trees, it's well worth to extend the walk to the neighbouring Šentanski vrh. It's rocky peak offers spectacular views towards the Karavanke range.

Author’s recommendation

Mt. Dobrča is also an excellent MTB climb, whilst hikers with less physical fitness can use the benefit of forest road to shorten the hike.

Destination

Start of the forest road outside the Zadnja vas village near Begunje na Gorenjskem

Turn-by-turn directions

After parking the car in the appropriate car park at the side of the road, follow the gravel forest road up the first (left-hand side) bend. The forest almost immediately opens up again, and you find yourself on a wide open meadow with wonderful view towards the Julian Alps. When the forest covers the road again, turn right to a short cut cutting the bend of the forest road. In two or three minutes you find yourself on the gravel road again, standing before a sharp hairpin bend turning left.

Follow the cart-track branching off to the right hand side, right from the sharp end of the road turn. Gradual track becomes more an more steeper and rougher. The terrain levels a bit, before it climbs back up again on a steep and (sometimes hardly still visible) path.

Orientation becomes less of an issue when the path meets with the trail leading from Hudi Graben village. Turn left and continue on a relatively steep forest trail high above the rocky crags bellow. The path broadens into a (less used) forest road, while wonderful view on the valley below opens beneath. Continue walking up the side forest road,  which soon joins with the main road to Dobrča making a big bend to the left. Simply cross the main road and look for the forest trail ascending into the forest above the road (red signpost "Dobrča" on the tree).

The trail ascending from Slatna and Begunje joins us from the left, as we traverse the forested mountain side above the road. After a long strecht of forest climb (occasionally interrupted by clear cuts)  the path meets the forest road again. Don't bother walking on the gravel, simply shorten the way by obvious short-cuts.

The path bends towards the right-hand side and leads to a cattle fence. Step across it, and hurry up towards the sunny meadows surrounding the Koča na Dobrči hut.

Find the broad forest road descending behind the hut and leading north. At the bottom of a small valley you shall see a group of herdsmen's houses on your right. Walk straight towards them on a waymarked trail , then surround them from the right hand side and traverse the mountain side across the wide open pastures. The pastures soon turn into a thin forest which gets thicker higher up. You find yourself on a forested ridge, where the terrain slightly levels. Two paths (from Podgorska planina and Lešanska planina alpine pastures) join from the right-hand side. Continue straight ahead - following the top on the ridge One last steep climb and you are standing on top of 1634 meters high peak of Mt. Dobrča.

The walk can be extended to nearby Šentanski vrh peak (spectacular view):

From the top of Mt. Dobrča descend towards north- north east on a quite obvious trail which brings you to a small valley overgrown with grass (nice view of Mt. Stol on the left-hand side). The trail continues straight ahead and climbs up to the rocky peak of Šentanski vrh.
