Goriška Brda stretches from the far west of Slovenia to the southern plain of Friuli. It is an idyllic wine-growing region with a variety of natural and cultural attractions. The route begins in the village of Breg pri Golem Brdu, meanders through the villages of Vrhovlje pri Kožbani, Fojana and Dobrovo - the center of the Brda region - and ends after a short detour at the Gonjače lookout tower in the picturesque village of Šmartno, one of the most beautiful cultural monuments in Slovenia.

Highlights along the way: St. Andrew's Church in Vrhovlje pri Kožbani: Typical Mediterranean church with the oldest frescoes in Brda showing scenes from the life of the Holy Family. Krčnik rock bridge and Kotline rock basin: The Krčnik rock bridge arches over a gorge and the Kožbanjšček river. The Kotline rock pools in the Kožbanjšček riverbed are very popular among young people of Brda as bathing places. Dobrovo Castle: The Renaissance castle dates back to 1600. On the second floor, visitors learn more about the life of the Baguer family. Part of the original furniture was returned to the castle and can also be visited on the second floor. On the third floor there is a permanent exhibition of the graphics of the world-famous painter Zoran Mušič. Gonjače observation tower: 144 steps take visitors to the top of the 23 meter high tower, which offers a fantastic panoramic view.

Turn-by-turn directions

After the start in Golo Brdo there is a climb with 200 meters of altitude. On the rough dirt road it goes partly steep, partly imperceptible uphill. Once we reach an asphalt road, it is only a few minutes to the church of St. Andrew. This is followed by an hour of downhill hiking. Through vineyards we come through the village Kozbana and then down to the asphalt road, on which we turn right. To the left of us the stream Kozbanjsek. We follow this on the road, and come to Peternel. Now there are about 17 hilly kilometers ahead of us. At the intersection, our next ascent to Hlevnik begins. Now it goes on enjoyable with wide views left and right of the way. Near the border, near a casino, we reach the valley again. Through vineyards and over a bridge we come to the other side of the valley and uphill to the old road Fojana-Rutarje. The hamlet of Kozlink continues to Dobrovo, the center of the Goriška Brda region. West of Dobrovo Castle, a small road leads down to Zadružna cesta. We follow this for about 500 m and then turn right, again on a paved road. We follow this always right until we turn after 1.5 km on a hiking trail in the vineyards. This path then takes us to the small village of Imenje, north of Šmartno. If you want, you can still make the scarce kilometer up to the lookout tower Gonjace - the view is worth in any case.

The route was beautiful, but scorching hot so we were happy we left early so as to avoid the peak of the heat. Beautiful wine landscapes and forgiving hills. Not too strenous but quite long stage. Sinage n to s was excellent but app navigation told a slightly different way. Smartno is small but exquisite.

Pretty good hill workout at the beginning and throughout. The highlight for me was the gorge waters. I traded speed for a one hour stop at the pools and completely submerged in the cool waters. Also the Venko hotel/casino right next to the trail was a perfect stop for me. 60 euros for a 4 star room. Breakfast surprisingly doesn't start until 0730, but you can opt for a sack lunch if you ask the night before.
