This stage starts in Kranjska Gora (810 metres) and leads past the Hotel Lek to the Jasna lakes before continuing along a forest trail to Erika. You will hike across Alpine meadows and through forests, along the Pišnica mountain stream and past the Mihov Dom shelter (at 1,085 metres) and the Russian Chapel. From there you will continue along the old donkey path to the summit of the Vršič (1,688 metres). It is just a few steps to the viewpoint from where you can see the face of a maiden in the rock (Ajdovska deklica). The Russian Chapel and the Ajdovska deklicaare the magical points of this section.

The route leads along the road from the Vršič Pass into the Trenta Valley. 200 metres below the second (26th) bend you change to the hiking trail below the road and follow the markings of the Slovenian Alpine association to the car park in front of the lodge at the source of the Soča. The hiking trail continues behind the lodge to the source, and you then come back the same way.

Near the car park a large display board shows the way to the Soča Trail. The typical small information posts of the Triglav National Park show the way to the information centre at the Trenta Lodge.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Kranjska Gora (810 metres) we follow hiking trail no. 7 past the Hotel Lek to the lakes of Jasna and then on to Erika. We continue to hike across Alpine meadows and through forests, along the Pišnica mountain stream and past the Mihov Dom shelter (at 1,085 metres) and the Russian Chapel. From there we continue along the old donkey path to the summit of the Vršič (1,688 metres). Public transport

By road

If in Slovenia, the Ljubljana–Kranj–Jesenice–Kranjska Gora road will lead you to your destination; from Austria, the road leads from Villach either over the Korensko sedlo border crossing or the Karavanke tunnel, whilst from Italy, the road will take you through the border crossing at Rateče.

By train/bus

The nearest train station is at Jesenice; there, you can board a bus for another 30-minute drive to Kranjska Gora, which is only 20 km away. There is also a train station in Tarvisio, Italy, and in Villach in Austria. From here, you can take a taxi, as both stations are no more than 20 kilometres away.

By plane

A 45 minute drive from Ljubljana Airport (66 km); a mere 40 minute drive from the airport in Klagenfurt (Austria) and an hour and 40 minutes from the airport at Trieste (Italy).

Getting there

Although the Zgornjesavka valley is safely embraced by the peaks of the Karavanke Mountains and the Julian Alps, the valley is easily accessible.

No more than half an hour’s drive will take you to the motorways in Italy (Tarvisio), Austria (Villach) or Slovenia (Karavanke tunnel). The nearest railway station is not far at all and there is less than an hour’s drive to the Ljubljana International Airport.

No, dear Christina, this building is not at the beginning of the stage. If you mean the AAT stage Kranjska Gora-Trenta, you pass this bulding when ascending (it's the Russian chapel and it's wooden, not rusty). But if you mean the beginning of Juliana Trail, you start it in the centre of Kranjska Gora and it runs in the opposite direction, so you don't pass the chapel. Kind regards, Boštjan from Base Camp

Bi človek mislil, da že pri Jasni doživiš vrhunec te etape, a je nadaljevanje poti po dolini Velike Pišnice ter vzpon na Vršič in sestop v Trento enako navdihujoč! / You would think that at Jasna you've already experienced the peak of this stage, but continuation of the route through the valley of Velika Pišnica, the ascent to Vršič and the descent to Trenta are equally inspiring!
