Safety information
Enjoying the long descend on gravel road from Mt. Dobrča, keep in mind the loose friction on gravel (especially in sharp turns).Tips and hints
-
Start the day with the morning coffee in Begunje! Mountain bikers love the casual atmosphere of Jurček Pub near the football pitch. The shaded garden of Guesthouse and Restaurant Avsenik is another great place to start the great climb up to Mt. Dobrča.
- If you have some energy to spare, it's worth to descend down from Zadnja vas village to visit the wonderful country countryside church of St. Lucy. The sight is well known for it's healing spring (reputed to help those with eye problems) and the elaborate renaissance portal carved from local sourced green stone (Peračica tuff).
-
Koča na Dobrči mountain hut (1478 meters above the sea level!) is famous for it's excellent homely cuisine: mushroom goulash, sausages, stews ... not to mention pancakes & strudels for all those with a sweet tooth.

Turn-by-turn directions
Standing outside the Tourist information centre in Begunje head south-west towards the village cemetery. Approaching it, you will find a narrow lane running between the cemetery wall and the garden of the famous Guesthouse Avsenik. Follow the lane descending to a small bridge above Begunjščica stream. Keep cycling in the same direction, to reach a front yard of a small farm. Turn right on the village road, than immediately left and up the hill towards the primary school. Cycle past the school and keep left (north) in the fork. Pass-by a recently built residential area (private homes and two apartment buildings) and follow a quiet village road leading across the meadows to the north-east. The lane first follows a tiny brook on your left-hand side, than an ancient stone wall on your right-hand side. Reaching a historic plaque column in an intersection of village lanes, turn right (direction: south-east). After reaching a group of up-market family homes, paved lane turns into a cart track. Follow it, and cycle alongside the hedge to the edge of the forest. A short, but rather steeps has to be climbed, to reach the paved road between Begunje and Tržič. Turn right and cycle on the popular panoramic road towards south-east.
Cycle right through villages Slatna, Srednja vas and Zadnja vas. After the village Zadnja vas you will cycle into a rather sharp bend (stunning view of Mt. Triglav and St. Lucy's church on your right-hand side). Coming out of the bend, you will notice a forest road branching off to the left hand side. Turn left, and start ascending on a steady gradual slope. The forest (dotted by holiday cottages) gets occasionally interrupted by meadows providing pleasant views of the valley below.
Soon the forest road makes a right-hand side turn, and the long steady ascent to Mt. Dobrča begins. First bend to the left comes rather soon, however the next one is 2 km or good 150 altitude meters away! At the end of the second long stretch of road climb, a road branches of to the right hand side. Ignore it, turn left and keep ascending on the principal road. Reaching the third "big bend" the atmosphere becomes more and more alpine, the road is barely still suitable for cars without 4x4 drive. The zig-zags (often interrupted by shortcuts made by hikers) become shorter and the ascent slightly steeper. Reaching the barrier (marking the end of road open to motorised vehicles) the road levels slightly as more and more spectacular views are to be enjoyed. This is undauntedly the most scenic and enjoyable part of the tour, just keep in mind you are sharing the trail with cattle on the pastures. High alpine forest gradualy opens into alpine pastures with picturesque shepherds huts. Stay on the cart track which leads you to the cabin on the top of the ridge. This is 1478 meters high mountain hut on Mt. Dobrča (Koča na Dobrči), your cycling goal for today.
After refreshing at the mountain hut (superb home-made cooking!) , or possibly storming the peak of Mt. Dobrča (by foot only!), retrace your track back down the forest road with an epic descend.
Reaching the panoramic road from Begunje to Tržič, turn right and cycle through the three villages one more time. This time, with completely different views! About 1 km after driving through the last of the villages (Slatna), be attentive of a forest road branching off to the left hand side. Make a left-hand side turn and start ascending on a shaky forest road. Don't worry, it's only a short climb (we know you are tired by now). After reaching the top of the natural terrace, you are rewarded by a nice long fast ride on a gradually descending forest road which eventually ends in a (often muddy) log skidding track.
Continue cycling straight ahead on a rolling log-skidding track running on top of a natural forest terrace. At the end of the promontory, the track turns right and descends steeply through a semi-natural gully. Soon you will see houses and meadows on your left-hand side and the track soon reaches an access road to a group of houses. Continue cycling in the same direction towards an intersection with beautifully painted catholic shrine/column.
- Unofficial option: ---------
Turn left and follow a dynamic single trail through the spruce tree forest. At the end of a natural terrace the trail bends left and descends steeply to a hay meadow. Follow the narrow cart track down to the forest road, than turn left and continue the descent towards the parking area. Pass the parking area and a modern spa hotel (Lambergh), than a renascence mansion (Drnča castle), both on your right hand side. Cycle further alongside the hedge (a nice park with an oval water pool can be seen through the gaps). Very soon, you will reach intersection next to a wooden crucifix. Turn right and follow the scenic field lane leading you north across the fields.
----------------------------
Reaching the the intersection (marked by a beautifully painted catholic shrine/column) turn right and continue cycling straight ahead on a gently ascending country lane (delightful views of Mt. Triglav and the Julian Alps stretching on your left hand side).
When you will approach a large building with children's playgrounds (village primary school) turn left and descend down to the principal village street. Turn right in the junction, than immediately left to an (already familiar) course pass the village cemetery and back to the start.
