The Jelovica forests have always been known as home to deer and chamois under mount Babji Zob, and to wolf families, lynxes and also bears. The diverse fauna is also the result of the work of generations of hunters who take care of the hunting grounds on Jelovica - hence the name of the trail “On the hunters’ trail to the Jelovica plateau”. During our journey we will visit the northern edges of the Jelovica plateau, which is one of the most uninhabited areas in the Gorenjska region. Despite this; however, it is abundant with forest roads and paths and thus very suitable for long-distance cycling. We will visit the hunting lodge on the Talež mountain pasture, where we will rest and have lunch.  Our sport spirit will also take a break, since a nice ascent and an attractive descent to our starting point still await us.

Author’s recommendation

This is a route for well-prepared and physically fit experienced cyclists, since endurance in the ascent, a sense of orientation and technical riding skills in the descent are required.   The bike and equipment must also be appropriate.

Safety information

The descent toward the “Bodeški most” bridge concludes on the road where car traffic is possible. On Jelovica we may encounter a forest worksite, where we must be extra careful and follow the instructions of the foresters. The descent from Talež is steep, the surface is unstable. We descend carefully from Talež due to hikers. Attention should also be paid when connecting to the “Ribenski most” bridge - “Bodeški most” bridge unpaved road under the campsite.

Tips and hints

The hunting lodge on Talež might be closed, we should therefore take a sufficient quantity of drinks and energy snacks with us for a longer ride.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the Triglavska roža Bled Infocenter we ride to the village of Koritno, where we turn left and then down at the first intersection in the village (Lesce signpost). At the end of the slope between the houses we should watch for the junction leading us right and downwards. A short, but pretty steep hill awaits us. We ride on an unpaved road until we reach a junction where we turn left. The path leads us through a small forest and across meadows on an unpaved road and then on a cart track passing by a footbridge over the Sava river (Šobec Camp).

We continue on the path across meadows until we reach the edge of the forest where we cross a small footbridge over a creek. We keep riding on this path which a bit later on turns right and then goes left and up a short slope until we reach a bench above the riverbed of the Sava Bohinjka river, where we take a break.  Then follows a descent to a road where we turn left crossing the “Bodeški most” bridge. After crossing the bridge we turn left and ride toward the settlement of Lancovo.  At the first asphalted junction we turn right, then right again and left on an uphill slope. Right under the top of the slope we can see on our left the remains of a bunker from WWII.  When we arrive to the intersection with a chapel, we turn left-

After a short ascent we ride past the church of St. Lambert. At the end of a slight descent, the path leads us to the left through villages toward the village of Kamna Gorica. When we arrive to the Radovljica - Kropa road, we ride along it to the signpost for Vošče and Brda.   Here, we turn right off the main road and continue straight at the intersection. We continue straight ahead at all the intersections, even when a cart track appears before us, which soon descends and goes slightly to the left. We ride along it until we arrive to a road that leads on the Talež and the “Goška ravan” mountain pastures.  We then turn right. We ascend to a junction for Talež, where there is a large signboard for the Talež hunting lodge on the right side of the road.  We turn right and follow the markings for the hunting lodge.

From the hunting lodge we ride back to the first junction where we turn left and downwards. We descent on a forest path which is quite steep in the beginning, but flattens nicely later on. The path brings us to a junction where we turn left and continue with our descent. The path at the end turn right and leads us by a campsite on the left bank of the Sava Bohinjka river. We (carefully!) ride straight down to an unpaved road, leading toward Ribno, and cross a bridge. The road takes us to the centre of the village (Cooperative home Ribno) where we turn right. At the first intersection (chapel, lime tree) we turn to a second road on the left toward Bled, until we arrive to the starting point at the Infocenter Triglavska roža Bled.
