Our path along Lake Bled will lead us to Velika Zaka and an old path will then take us to Bohinjska Bela.  A marking before a steeper ascent informs us that this path was used by locals a long time ago. We arrive to Bohinjska Bela on a cart track parallel to the Bled - Bohinjska Bistrica railway line on our left. At the centre of the village we ride by the old livestock waterer to the bridge over the Sava Bohinjka river. An almost 3-kilometres long ascent to Kupljenik begins, where we will reach the highest point of our trip. From Kupljenik we descend on an old cart track to the Selski most bridge, which we cross and continue to the bridge of Ribno. We cross this bridge too and continue on the path along the Sava river toward the Bodeški most bridge.  We turn left and after crossing the bridge we immediately turn right following the path. We continue upwards, then downwards, left and right, crossing a small bridge over a creek, across meadows and through forests with a breath-taking view to the Karavanke mountain range under the village of Koritno. The last ascent awaits us, taking us to a road leading from Koritno to Bled and our starting point.

Author’s recommendation

The route to Bohinjska Bela is easy and suitable for less prepared cyclists who will probably have to tackle the last part of the ascent on the road between the peaks of Osojnica and Obnik on foot by their bike. From Bohinjska Bela it is possible to head back to Bled. The ascent from the bridge over the Sava Bohinjka river to Kupljenik is hard, since the incline dose not relent until the top. The entire trail is intended for well-prepared and physically fit cyclists with experience riding on demanding, steep terrain.

Safety information

Speed when riding by the lake and through Bohinjska Bela should be adjusted due to pedestrians and due to a narrow, road with blind spots between houses. Ride carefully across the Bled - Bohinj trunk road. The descent from the chapel under Kupljenik due to the steep (up to 23% incline) and unstable surface should be done upright with even breaking with the front and rear break. Ride carefully through the S-bend at the bottom due to unstable surface.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the Triglavska Roža Bled Infocenter we pass the Ice Hall, the municipal building and the Festival Hall, where a view to the lake opens up. We continue riding on the Rowers' promenade around the rowing centre to Velika Zaka, then we turn right after the campsite to a nice unpaved path. We continue across the valley between the peaks of Osojnica and Obnik toward Bohinjska Bela. From Velika Zaka the path rises in an at first moderate then steep but short ascent on a dirt road.

This is followed by a nice, very gradual descent on an unpaved path to an underpass under the Bled - Bohinjska Bistrica railway line. We turn left through the underpass and continue downhill on a narrow and steep country road. We then cross the main country road and turn left toward a multi-purpose building (shop and buffet restaurant) and continue the descent to the bridge over the Sava Bohinjka river. After a moderate ascent from the bridge we reach the Bled - Bohinj trunk road, which we cross at the turn for the village of Kupljenik. An approximately 2.5 km long ascent on a paved road awaits us there. In some segments the incline exceeds 12%.

At the top of the village we follow the road which crosses the slope and continue outside the village until reaching a marking. At the marking we turn right off from the paved road down to an unpaved cart track with a moderate incline. This is followed by a nice, clear and moderately steep descent on the edge of magnificent meadows and forests. When the trail turn right and starts straightening out, we can stop and take the path to the left up to a magnificent viewpoint. We access it on foot.

We continue riding on the path under the chapel. From there, the path begins its steep descent, so proceed carefully! We drive through the entire descent STANDING ON THE PEDALS! When the terrain begins straightening out, we continue on a nice, even forest path to a village bridge which we cross and continue right on the left bank of the Sava river to the bridge of Ribno. We cross the Ribno bridge, turn left and then we ride on a nice unpaved path under the Jelovica plateau toward the Bodeški most bridge.

We cross the bridge and turn right immediately on the left bank of the Sava river up on a short, but steep slope. There is a bench for resting at the top. After a short descent the path straightens out and takes us across meadows and partly through a forest by the Sava Dolinka river all the way to the ascent to the settlement of Koritno. The path to Koritno is steep in some parts. As we arrive from the meadows between the houses, we turn left and the up, continuing the ascent on a paved road.  On the top we turn right toward Bled and our starting point.
