Mt. Jelenk is a 787 m high sightseeing hill above the town of Kanal and lies on the western part of the Banjška planota Plateau. The top of Mt. Jelenk is distinctively rocky and includes typical limestone pavements, elongated limestone channels on barren hard limestone surfaces created by flowing water. On the top of the hill, you can enjoy in splendid views of the Julian Alps with Mt. Matajur in the forefront and the Kanin Mountain range in the background. If you look to the right, you can admire Mt. Krn, Mt. Vrh nad Peski and the Bohinj–Tolmin Mountain chain. Just beneath you, you can notice the village of Kanalski Vrh with a large artificial accumulation lake of the pumped-storage hydropower plant Avče in the vicinity. If you look to the other side, you can enjoy in views of the Banjška planota Plateau, Mt. Sveta gora, Mt. Sabotin and the Adriatic Sea in the background. Just beneath the foothills of Mt. Jelenk, you can find the village of Bate.

Mt. Jelenk is well known as a holy mountain of ancient believers and because the Slovenian tricolour flag was first put out on the top in 1850.

On a small hill in the vicinity of the village of Kanalski Vrh, you can find a Church of St. Anthony of Padova, which was first mentioned in written sources already in 1512 and which was restored in 1857. The church altar table contains relics of martyrs.

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour starts at the municipal square in the town of Kanal from where you ascend to the Kanal Mansion (castle). From there, you should follow the markings for the village of Kanalski Vrh. When you arrive to the sign for Mt. Jelenk at the centre of the village, turn to the right on the cart track which soon turns into a footpath. This footpath can become somewhat more demanding due to the numerous rocks. Follow the markings along the footpath which will take you to the top of Mt. Jelenk.
