A valley where the silence makes your ears hurt – a statement which would not surprise anyone after overcoming the tour through the larch trees and past the karst features or the somewhat higher tour over the peaks above the Travnik Valley.

The Travniška dolina Valley is a true delight for all who would like to escape from the noisy valley and an excellent starting point for several hiking tours. During the late spring and summer months it is a genuine florist shop with a large variety of plants and a paradise for tour skiers during the winter months.

You can reach it through a nice forest and explore it along a poorly-worn trail which does not make the ascent more difficult because the directions are simple, especially for experienced mountaineers who are used to walking along less distinctive trails and footpaths. The valley is surrounded by a chain of mountain peaks from Mt. Travniški rob, Mt. Travnik and Mt. Plaski Vogel on the left side of the valley and Mt. Vršac and Mt. Čelo on the right side. When ascending across the notch of Mt. Travnik, splendid views open towards the Trenta Valley to the north, whilst just beneath the mountain wall, you can enjoy in views of the secluded valley of Dol pod Plazmi with Mt. Čisti vrh, Mt. Mala Tičarica and Mt. Velika Tičarica above it. By prolonging the tour from Mt. Travnik to Mt. Plaski Vogel you prolong the tour for approximately 1 h of walking.

Author’s recommendation

This tour, especially its second part, is routed over terrain that provides no shade or water source. During the summer months you should bring a sufficient supply of water and sun protection.

Destination

Mt. Travnik (2,256 m)

Turn-by-turn directions

At the parking lot, start following the gravel road and turn downhill to the right until you reach the bridge across the torrent. Follow the narrow trail through the forest and cross the grassy slope where wonderful views open towards the valley. At this location you can also notice the Za skalo Mountain pasture. Turn uphill to the left in the vicinity of this mountain pasture and continue along the scree slope until you reach the beginning of a steep channel where you can use the protective equipment in order to get ahead. When the trail levels up a little, continue through the thin larch forest. The trail is then routed along the right side of the valley where splendid views open towards Mt. Čelo. The trail  becomes somewhat more difficult to follow at this section, however, directions are simple because your destination is always in front of your eyes. When the valley starts to turn to the right, turn left and start ascending along the steep grassy slopes towards the notch Travniška škrbina (notch to the left of Mt. Travnik; you can also reach the top of Mt. Travnik across the notch at the end of the valley located on the right side of Mt. Travnik). Turn right when you reach the notch of Travniška škrbina and ascend along the ridge to the top. Return along the same trail.

Getting there

From Bovec: Drive to the village of Soča and turn right in the direction of the Tourist farm Jelinčič and Kamp Korita. Do not turn left towards the camp behind the bridge but continue straight ahead along the paved road which will take you across the meadows and past the huts into the forest. After a couple kilometres of driving, the road will take you to the first signs located at the Pod Zjabci area. Continue driving for approximately 3 – 4 km until you reach a small parking lot at the sharp left bend.

Parking

Small parking lot next to the road.
