Wonderful tour on the highest mountain in Slovenia, which is technically easy except for the last part, but very long. The last 250 m are climbing-like (slightly exposed, pegs).

Safety information

Long mountain tour - therefore important to plan accordingly! The GPS track includes the tracked tour from the summit downhill, uphill it was "re-routed" by the navigation software - hence the deviations.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the car park, follow the gravel road in the direction of the valley for about 3km (there is only one crossroads, keep right here - Dolica) until it ends at a signpost. Follow the signpost (Triglav; Koča na Doliču - 4h) straight ahead over a small bridge and then up the forest through serpentines. After a good hour you come to a crossroads where you turn right (well signposted - Triglav 5h).

The trail now runs through steeper terrain and rocky walls, always maintaining a very pleasant gradient and width (this was probably once a military trail). Soon you will see the Koča na Doliču hut in a saddle - but it approaches only slowly. At a medium pace without breaks, the hut can be reached from the end of the gravel road in 3 h (i.e. 1 h faster than indicated).

Shortly before the hut, the path to Triglav branches off to the left, although the path is still very wide and pleasant to walk on. On the plateau before the summit there are several paths, one of which bends to the NW and passes old military ruins. Follow the path through loose scree to the start of the "via ferrata" (approx. 250 m below the summit).

This is not technically difficult (approx. A), mostly only steps and pins are drilled into the rock for support. However, a head for heights is a prerequisite, as there are a few exposed sections. Some passages are secured with wire ropes, but a via ferrata set can only be used in a few places (mainly pins, no continuous rope). A helmet should be worn.

Due to the popularity of the Triglav tours, allow enough time for this part, as you often have to wait at narrow points (the way down is the same or, in the case of east-west crossings, people also come down here).

This last section is well marked, as is the entire tour (small red circle) and after about 7 hours you have reached the summit (2,864m).

The descent is as follows.

Descent as ascent. It is certainly recommended to extend the tour to a multi-day tour, e.g. to the Lakes Valley, which can make the tour more relaxing. A very early start is recommended, as you walk in the shade until the hut and have more reserves for the total tour length of a good 13 hours. Tip: cover the first 3km of gravel road by mountain bike to "shorten" the descent.
