Parking is available at an unarranged parking lot in front of the village of Gabrje. The marked trail takes you past the Kofol Mill and along the ravine of the Sopotnica Stream with wonderful waterfalls and cascades. This initially relatively steep trail turns into a cart track after approximately 30 minutes of walking. Follow the cart track to the turn towards the Grofova voda spring. Because the trail to the spring is routed high above the ravine it is secured and therefore appropriate for everyone.

Return to the cart track along the same trail you came from. Follow the signs for Mt. Mrzli vrh which will take you to the Grmuč Mountain pasture.

At the mountain pasture use some imagination to ascend to the well-visible sightseeing peak called Grmuč which offers splendid views. From the top of this peak turn towards the east and follow the ridge with an unmarked but well-worn trail towards Mt. Vodil vrh. You can find this trail after crossing the pasture fence. The trail continues into the forest and leads to a field gate. Climb over the field gate and descend to the cart track which takes you across the grassy slope to Mt. Vodil vrh. Descend to the village of Zatolmin along a steep trail which is initially routed along the pasture fence which it later crosses.

Author’s recommendation

In wet or very cold weather we advise you not to descend to the village of Zatolmin because the steep trail towards the village of Zatolmin can become icy and slippery.

Safety information

Certain sections of the trail along the ravine of the Sopotnica Stream are somewhat exposed and require caution. The descent from Mt. Vodil vrh to the village of Zatolmin can become slippery in wet weather.

Equipment

Because of the varied terrain, the ascent and the descent along the described trail require good footwear and trekking poles (for those who are used to walking with trekking poles). Trekking poles can be of great help especially when descending to the village of Zatolmin.

Tips, hints and links

From Mt. Grmuč you can also ascend to the adjacent Mt. Mrzli vrh instead of Mt. Vodil vrh. Return to the valley along the same trail you came from. In this case, directions are much simpler.

If you have the option of using two cars, you can park one in the village of Zatolmin and the other in the village of Gabrje. In this way you save yourself the walk to the village of Gabrje.

Turn-by-turn directions

In the village of Gabrje, start following the marked and well-worn trail until you reach the cart trail. At the junction with the sign for Mt. Mrzli vrh – Mt. Vodil vrh turn to the left towards Mt. Mrzli vrh. At the next junction do not turn towards Mt. Mrzli vrh but follow the cart trail to the right which will take you to the mountain pass between Mt. Mrzli vrh and Mt. Grmuč. Here, you will be able to see the Školj Mountain pasture. From this mountain pass ascend along animal trails to the top of Mt. Grmuč. You will find the next section of the trail after crossing the pasture fence towards the east. The trail initially takes you into the forest and later descends along the ridge to the next field gate. Cross the field gate and descend past the small mountain hut to the visible cart track leading towards Mt. Vodil vrh. On the bench in the vicinity of the lovely mountain hut you can have a snack or rest. Continue along the trail above the mountain hut towards the east. Descend along the pasture fence to the bench which will help you cross it. Continue along the trail leading along the steep grassy slope to the forest. The trail to the chapel above the village of Zatolmin is routed along a steep slope, whilst the section of the trail from the chapel to the village of Zatolmin is routed along the narrow paved road with certain concrete sections. The last section of the tour will take you to the village of Gabrje.
