You will certainly experience something new along the ascent to one of the finest Slovenian summits. At the same time, more demanding hikers can also take this tour as an excellent training opportunity.

In the first section of this demanding hiking trail, you will be able to enjoy in views of the Trenta Valley, whilst in the second section, you will be able to enjoy in views of the extremely dynamic rocky area covered with pillows of diverse multi-coloured flowers and low bushes. Later, you will experience all the beauty of the desolate cruelty of the natural rock distinctive for such high mountains. Occasionally, you will also be able to notice scarce Edelweiss flowers peering over certain rocks.

While admiring the diversity of the landscape, you will no longer find the trail particularly long anymore. You will also forget about the time in the section leading towards the top because you will have to pay attention to the varied rocky terrain.

In nice and sunny weather, the top of the mountain will reward you with unique views of the Julian Alps all the way to the Karavanke Mountain chain and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. You will also be able to enjoy in splendid views of the neighbouring summits of Mt. Jalovec and Mt. Mangart and the Bavšica and Trenta Valleys.

Author’s recommendation

This tour is appropriate for physically well-prepared hikers.

There is no drinking water available along the trail, which is why we advise you to bring a sufficient supply of water.

Tips and hints

During the summer months we advise you to start this tour early in the morning because the entire trail is routed along the southern side of the mountain, which is exposed to the sun.

You can start or end the tour in the Bavšica Valley, however, you should first inform yourself about the safety conditions along the trail.

Destination

Mt. Bavški Grintavec (2347 m)

Turn-by-turn directions

From the town of Bovec or from the Trenta Valley, drive to the little church of St. Joseph in the village of Soča where you can park; parking is also available 200 metres further away, at the starting point of this tour where there are only two or three parking spaces available.

Follow the well-marked steep trail through the forest which will take you to the abandoned village of Lemovje. Continue along the trail which is partly routed through the forest and partly along grassy slopes, cross the steep south slopes and continue to the sightseeing hunting lodge on the mountain pasture above the village of Soča. From here on, follow the marked footpath to the right and ascend along the grassy slopes and through the increasingly thin forest. When you exit the forest, hike through dwarf pines and continue to the scree slopes beneath Mt. Bavški Grintavec. In the last section, you have to ascend across scree slopes where caution is required due to the exposed and crumbly terrain. Return to the village of Soča along the same trail you came from.
