This nicely routed trail gradually ascends from the forest above the village of Strmec to the high-altitude world of the Mangart Mountain pass with breath-taking views of Mt Mangart (2679 m), the longest mountain wall of the Julian Alps - Loška stena, the emerald mountain of the Julian Alps – Mt. Jalovec, and the Fusine lakes deep below in Italy. Along this trail you will of course come across other breath-taking sights which will repay all of your efforts along this relatively long tour.

Author’s recommendation

We recommend you to visit the Koča na Mangartskem sedlu Mountain hut (excellent desserts and stews ;-)) as well as the Mangart Mountain pasture Alpine dairy-farm (purchase of sheep cheese).

Destination

Mangart Mountain pass

Turn-by-turn directions

This approximately 20-kilometre-long tour starts at the parking lot behind the village of Strmec, under the telecommunication antenna. The trail gradually ascends through the forest to the first technical curiosity – dam for the Log pod Mangartom hydroelectric power plant. At this point, turn to the right into the forest and slowly ascend through the cool beech forest beneath the Strmec plains to the abandoned forest road which you cross and continue along a relatively level section for a short while until you arrive to Gorenji stan. Here, the trail joins the hiking trail which it follows almost to the junction with the paved road a couple of hundred metres in front of the last Mangart tunnel. At this point, turn away from the road and continue along an old military trail above the road which leads to the ruins of the old military fortification and past this fortification to the Mangart Mountain pass which represents the highest point of this ascent. After you have rested and enjoyed in views of the surrounding area, continue with a descent towards the Koča na Mangartskem sedlu Mountain hut. There is of course no need to mention that a stop at this mountain hut to taste the delicious apple strudel is almost mandatory. From the mountain hut, the trail descends through the last tunnel of the Mangart road and soon turns to the same trail you came from. The trail continues across the Mesnovka area back to the Gorenji stan Shepherds’ hut from where you descend along the hiking trail to the Mangart Mountain pasture (almost mandatory tasting and purchase of sheep cheese and cottage cheese). Just behind the mountain pasture you arrive to the area of the Stože avalanche which devastated the village of Log pod Mangartom in 2000. Today, the avalanche area is restored and safre and does not represent any problems for hiking. At this point, you can already see the new mighty viaduct across the Mangart Stream. Approximately a half kilometre in front of this viaduct, our trail turns to the left towards the dam for the pipeline of the accumulation reservoir above the village of Strmec. From this junction, you can effortlessly continue along the level terrain above the concrete pipe to the dam where you start following the trail you came from and continue along a couple of bends until you arrive to the parking lot in the village of Strmec.
