Start the tour at the parking lot and drive to the centre of the town of Bovec which used to stand next to an important old transport route connecting Trieste and Vienna. During World War I this town was significantly impacted by the numerous battles, which is evidenced by the numerous remnants of World War I. Nowadays Bovec is a developed tourist centre offering culinary as well as numerous sporting experiences. Drive from the centre of Bovec past the Church of St. Ulrich which was built in 1192 and stands on a high plateau accessible along an impressive staircase. Cycle past the Kaninska vas apartment village and you will soon be able to notice a turn on the left leading to the hamlet of Plužna and further to the Virje Waterfall and the spring of the Glijun Stream. Pass this turn and continue along the gravel road with panoramic views of Bovec and the wider area. After a steep ascent towards the Krnica Mountain pasture you will soon be able to enjoy in the Alpine world of the Krnica Valley. When you reach the end of the tour you can take a rest on a bench or enjoy in splendid views of the Krnica Mountain pasture, Soča Valley and the surrounding summits.

Author’s recommendation

This tour is routed along a relatively unbusy road. During the hot summer days we recommend you to take this tour early in the morning or in the afternoon when you will be able to cycle in the shadow. Make sure to bring a sufficient amount of food and drinks because you will not be able to replenish your water supply or visit a restaurant along this tour. You can visit the Virje Waterfall and the spring of the Glijun Stream on your return if you turn to the hamlet of Plužna. In the vicinity of the waterfall you will be able to find a nice pool where you can refresh yourself during the summer months. In this case you should return to the starting point by turning downhill in the centre of Plužna past the golf course to the main road Bovec–Žaga and by turning left onto this road which you should follow back to the starting point. On your return you can refresh yourself in restaurants in Bovec, freshen up in the Soča River or visit the numerous natural and cultural sights in the vicinity of Bovec (Fort Hermann, Kluže Fortress, Kluže Gorge, etc.)

Turn-by-turn directions

Start your cycling tour at Station A of the Kanin cableway or at the camper parking lot Camper stop Bovec. Drive through the centre of the town of Bovec, pass the numerous bars and shops and turn left on the main square along the steep paved road towards the church and further above the Kaninska vas apartment village and past the turn for the hamlet of Plužna. The paved road will soon turn into a well-worn gravel road. Keep cycling along the main road which gradually ascends past Station B to Station C of the Kanin cableway. Before you reach the turn for Station C turn right along the main road towards the Krnica Mountain pasture. Continue along a steep ascent and pass the zipline. The steepest sections of the last ascent are concreted. When you reach the highest point of the ascent you will find a bench with a wonderful view of the valley and the surrounding summits. From here on you have to follow the footpath into the Krnica Valley. Return along the same way you came from.
