Behind the roadmen house (1080 m), located along the road to the Vršič Mountain pass, descend down the cart track and after approximately 50 m turn uphill to the left to a nicely routed hunting trail. Hike just above the riverbed of the Mlinarica Stream. During the spring months the trail is decorated with numerous Christmas-rose flowers. If the winter was generous with snow, you can soon find yourself in genuine winter conditions because you will have to wait until noon for the sun to shine into the valley. You hike more or less in the shade until you reach the Griva Mountain rib at the altitude of 2000 metres where you are greeted by the sun. Continue towards the well visible peak of Mt. Mali Razor which you will pass along the ledge at its foothills and continue to the mountain pass. Here, splendid views open towards Kranjska Gora, Mt. Špik and Mt. Škrlatica.

There is enough space at the mountain pass to make yourself comfortable and enjoy the view. Plan your descent in accordance with the conditions. If snow conditions are great, the slope between Mt. Prisojnik on the right and Mt. Razor on the left offers enough snow and several ski routes. The snow tongues sometimes allow you to ski almost back to the starting point.

Author’s recommendation

Until the end of March, the Mlinarica Valley is covered in shade most of the day which is why you should not hurry to make the ascent. In the middle of the day, you will enjoy the best spring skiing conditions.

Safety information

It is not safe to ski in this valley immediately after heavy snowfall because the slope becomes prone to avalanches.

The sun does not shine into the valley until the middle of the day which is why the surface of the snow is usually hard and slippery. We recommend you to make the ascent by using crampons and the ice-axe.

Tips and hints

You can choose the route of your ascent or descent according to your level of experience and quality of the surface because the inclination of the slope varies. Adapt the course to your abilities.

Destination

Mt. Mali Razor (2191 m)

Turn-by-turn directions

Behind the roadmen house (1080 m), located along the road to the Vršič Mountain pass, descend down the cart track and after approximately 50 m take the hunting trail on your left which leads uphill through the forest. When you reach the junction, turn to the right. After approximately 30 minutes of walking you will reach the usually dry riverbed of the Mlinarica Stream. If snow conditions are good you can put on your skis already there and ascend along the wide slopes beneath Mt. Razor. Keep close to the access trail. When you reach the Griva Mountain rib at an elevation of approximately 2000 mwtres, turn straight uphill towards the well visible pyramid-shaped Mt. Mali Razor. If your destination is the mountain pass on the left side of the summit you should stop at the distinctive ledge at the foothills of the summit. Put on your crampons and take out your ice-axe because the slope to the mountain pass is very steep and it is more comfortable to make the ascent with skis on your rucksack. You can ski down the access trail or on the right side of the trail. During the spring months, the surface of the snow in the area on the left side beneath the wall of Mt. Razor is usually hard until the middle of the day because this side of the mountain lies in the shade. This area provides the best skiing conditions if you do not make your ascent too early.
