Tour to Mt. Matajur is a safe option to choose when there is great danger of avalanches in high altitude mountains. It is an appropriate destination for morning or afternoon skiing and an excellent tour to a magnificent sightseeing hill.

Park your vehicle above the village of Montemaggiore and follow the trail past the former pastures and the mountain hut of the Benečija Mountaineering Society to the chapel located on the highest point.

Ski along the friendly slopes on the other side of the mountain until you reach the Italian Pelizzo Mountain hut and continue along the road until you reach the village. If there is enough snow you can shorten the bends by taking shortcuts across the meadows.

Ski touring from Mt. Matajur is undemanding but always pleasant and fascinating in the weather is fine.

Author’s recommendation

The author prefers afternoon ascents with the chance to enjoy in splendid views from the top and to wait for the sunset which provides just enough sunlight for a safe descend back to the vehicle.

Turn-by-turn directions

Park your car along the road above the village. Just above the first bend, a hiking trail turns uphill to the left and is usually already waded or includes ski tracks.

Continue across the hay-fields and through the forest to the first mountain pasture and along the open area and the sightseeing ridge past the mountain hut of the Benečija Mountaineering Society to the top of the mountain.

Ski down the wonderful and gradual slopes to the road which ends at the Pelizzo Mountain hut. Continue skiing along the road to the starting point. If the weather conditions are nice, skiing is even more enjoyable if you cut the bends and ski across the meadows.
