When the winter comes and the snow falls, this popular hiking-cycling gravel road can turn into a wonderful snowshoeing trail already in the late autumn. The mountain amphitheatre with the Loška stena Mountain wall, Mt. Jalovec and Mt. Mangart will not let you indifferent even during the winter months.
Author’s recommendation
Even though the first kilometre of the trail is usually ploughed, we recommend you to park your vehicle at the parking lot next to the new bridge in the upper part of the village of Log pod Mangartom.
As a rule, this trail is undemanding and gently inclining. You should only be cautious at one or two sections at the most where you have to pass snow avalanches if the winter was generous with snow.
In case of heavy snowfall, and immediately after, we advise you not to hike and snowshoe into the gable end of the valley.
Tips and hints
Despite the trail being relatively undemanding we recommend you to hire an experienced guide.
This trail is also suitable for hiking as well as mountain biking during the winters without snow. In order to return from the gable end of the valley you can take the circular trail L4 which is, however, not suitable for cyclists.

Turn-by-turn directions
The trail starts at the parking lot behind the new bridge in the upper part of the village of Log pod Mangartom which is usually appropriately ploughed. Because the road is usually ploughed to the Log pod Mangartom hydroelectric power plant and a bit further, to the first vacation houses in the valley, you can walk to that point and put on your snowshoes there. The trail gently ascends all the way to the gable end of the valley and should not represent a greater challenge to phisically well-prepared hikers. We recommend you to end your hike at the last signpost of the L4 trail (when the trail turns back towards the village). If you were to continue, you would arrive into the area of active and powerful snow avalanches.
Orientation-wise, this trail is completely undemanding because it is routed entirely along the gravel road. You should only pay attention to the bushes or trees bent under the weight of the snow which can harm you if they get released suddenly. In ussual snow conditions we recommend you to return along the same trail.
