The trail is mostly routed along an arranged forest road and very gradually ascends to the Božca Mountain pasture from where you can quickly reach the top of the mountain along the trail across the pastures. The higher you get, the more beautiful the views become and culminate with hiking along the ridge to the top of the mountain.

Author’s recommendation

Because of its length, the tour is appropriate for physically well-prepared hikers.

Safety information

From the Spodnja Božca Mountain pasture to the beginning of the ridge above the Božca Mountain pasture you come across small avalanche sections. At the section between the Božca Mountain pasture to the top of the mountain we recommend you to hike along the right side of the ridge, especially in windy conditions.

Tips and hints

If you notice that the forest road from the former border crossing Učja is ploughed, we advise you to make this section of the trail without snow-shoes. In good snow conditions we advise you to make the ascent on snow-shoes and to return on skis.

Destination

Mt. Stol (1673 m)

Turn-by-turn directions

Drive to the former border crossing Učja where there are usually enough free parking spaces. Approximately 50 metres in front of the parking lot there is a forest road leading uphill to the left which you follow past the sightseeing point Hum (one of the finest views of the Bovec Basin) and Spodnja Božca Mountain pasture (hunting lodge) until you reach the ridge above the Božca Mountain pasture where you can start enjoying in views of the Breginjski kot Valley and the Nadiža River. As soon as you reach the ridge, turn uphill to the right towards the top of Mt. Stol. You can also snowshoe outside the well-worn trail without any fear because the ridge and the slopes beneath the ridge do not hide any traps in the form of sinkholes or Karst caves. You will arrive to the top of the mountain after approximately 60 minutes of walking. Views of Mt. Matajur, Mt. Krn, the Western Julian Alps and especially the Kanin Mountain range almost in front of you are priceless. You return along the trail you came from. You can significantly shorten the descent and make it nicer by bringing touring skis.
