Safety information

The trail from the Tonocov grad archaeological site to the Soča River requires caution because it includes stairs which can get slippery and because it crosses the main road Kobarid - Bovec.

The trail to the Kozjak Waterfall is highly visited during the summer months. Extra caution is advised at the last section of the trail, just in front of the waterfall, because it often gets crowded.

Tips and hints

If you do not have plenty of time you can decide to take a shorter circular trail by parking in the vicinity of the Napoleon’s Bridge across the Soča River. from here, follow the signs for the Kozjak Waterfall and visit the remnants of World War I and Mali Kozjak and Veliki Kozjak Waterfalls. On the return, follow the same trail you came from for a while and then cross the Soča River across the wooden footbridge. Return past Kamp Lazar and continue along the Soča River to the Napoleon’s Bridge which offers splendid views of the ravine of the Soča River.

The trail to the Kozjak Waterfall is highly visited in July and August. There is a parking lot available at the Napoleon’s Bridge which fills up quickly. During the top tourist season it is recommended that you park in the centre of Kobarid (Kobarid Community Centre) or in the vicinity of the cemetery.

Turn-by-turn directions

Because this tour is routed in the vicinity of the town of Kobarid you can take it in both directions. It is recommended, however, that you start in the centre of the town and visit the Italian Charnel House which provides wonderful views of the Soča River and the town of Kobarid. The trail on the left side of the Charnel House leads into the forest where you soon turn to the left (sign Tonocov grad). After you overcome the gentle 30-minute-ascent, you arrive to the Tonocov grad archaeological site (412 m) which was used as a settlement through many centuries due to its naturally protected location. At the end of the 5th century, the settlement on the hill included more than 20 houses and several churches. Ruins of these structures can still be seen today.

From the Tonocov grad archaeological site you descend down the steep stairs towards the Soča River (follow the sign for Kozjak Waterfall) and cross the main road Kobarid - Bovec. At the end of the descent you can notice the remnants of World War I. Turn to the left and continue towards the wooden footbridge across the Soča River. Cross the footbridge and turn to the left towards the Kozjak Waterfall. Walk for another 10 minutes and cross a small stone bridge under which the Kozjak Stream falls into the Mali Kozjak Waterfall. Keep to the right and continue to the Veliki Kozjak Waterfall. The last section of the trail is routed over rocks, boulders and wooden footbridge, and requires caution.

Return along the same trail to the wooden footbridge, visit the remnants of World War I (bunkers), and continue along the gravel road to the main road Kobarid - Drežnica. When you reach the main road turn to the right across the Napoleon’s Bridge across the Soča River towards the centre of the town of Kobarid.
