A pleasant ascent to the place of meeting of the rebels and to the popular pilgrimage Church.
easy
Distance 3.3 km
Mt. Mengore is a magical point which used to be a place of meeting of peasant rebels, a pilgrimage point, St. Mary’s sanctuary, an old fortification during World War I, and a symbol of rebellion during the fascist era. Today it is a sanctuary, hiking tour and a gathering point for lovers – A focal point of everything beautiful. There are several trails leading to the top. Our trail is routed from the side facing the village of Volče which is routed past the 14 chapels of the Stations of the Cross. In 2008, these chapels were decorated with beautiful new mosaics created by Friar Marko Rupnik who is probably the most important sacral artist of the modern era.
The trail is gradually ascending through the forest past the chapels and the remnants of caverns from World War I. At the top, you are generously awarded with splendid views of Mt. Krn and the peaks of the Tolmin Mountain chain. If the Church is open, you certainly have to enter and take a look at the altar painting and other paintings by Tone Kralj and his wife Mara.
Author’s recommendation
The ascent to Mt. Mengore is pleasant throughout the entire year, but is the most wonderful in early spring (April).
