A short stage of the trail runs from Stara Fužina, Ribčev Laz near Lake Bohinj on unpaved roads and paths across the panoramic Dobrava meadows to Bohinjska Bistrica, which is the administrative centre of Bohinj.
This stage starts at the Triglav National Park Centre in Stara Fužina and initially runs along the Lake Bohinj shore. Lake Bohinj is the largest natural permanent lake in Slovenia (4.1 km long and 1.2 km wide, 45 metres deep). It is typical that it has several springs of water at the bottom; therefore, it is colder but cleaner than Lake Bled. The ironworks industry in Bohinj started right here. The railway, with the tunnel built in 1906, has contributed to Bohinj's progress. The pastures of Bohinj are still used for animal grazing and cheese production. An interesting cheese trail runs from pasture to pasture. The Bohinj cow (cika) is the symbol of Bohinj and many local products are made under the Bohinjsko/From Bohinj brand. You can take a car cable 1000 metres high at the end of Lake Bohinj to the Vogel Ski Centre, which is a winter/summer resort that offers views of Triglav and other mountains. The trail runs along the Lower Bohinj Valley from Ribčev Laz to Bohinjska Bistrica, i.e. through villages under the Bohinj and Tolmin mountains, across the diverse meadows of Dobrava, which offer a wonderful view of the Triglav mountains. Bohinjska Bistrica is the administrative centre of the valley.

Author’s recommendation

This stage is shorter, so you can take more time to enjoy, rest and even swim in the lake. You can also visit the nearby spring of Bistrica brook and the military cemetery at Rebro in Bohinjska Bistrica.

Tips, hints and links

Hint by Triglav National Park: Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj is the heart of Bohinj. It collects waters from the surrounding mountains and the water arteries from the foot of Triglav that flow through the Triglav Lakes and further down to Lake Bohinj and the Sava Bohinjka River. During a flash flood, the water level may rise by several metres. In the summer heat, the lake attracts crowds of bathers.

We hope that your visit to the lake and its coast will be a memorable experience. Please respect the access and visitation regime in place. Wild camping and bivouacking outside designated areas is not allowed.

The stage runs along marked Bohinj hiking trails.

Start at the TNP Centre and continue along the cart track towards Lake Bohinj. When you come to the lake, turn left and follow the shore along the unpaved road, past the inn to the main asphalt road from Stara Fužina to Ribčev Laz. At the famous Church of St John the Baptist continue over the stone bridge and left towards Bohinjska Bistrica. Turn left after 200 metres, walk past the TIC Bohinj in Ribčev Laz and come to a narrow asphalt road through the village of Ribčev Laz. Walk along the road, then turn right and left again onto the cart track; you will come to an unpaved forest road that takes you to Bareča dolina. After 200 metres, turn left and come to the holiday house area in Polje. From there continue above the last houses and the cart road to Polje Nordic Centre. Go past the ski jumps to the asphalt road towards Žlan, turn right onto the steep road to come to the village; behind the first house turn left onto a cart track and carry on to Dobrava meadows that offer a great view of Triglav and other mountains. Continue along the unpaved road towards Bohinjska Bistrica, which is reached when you cross the Bistrica Brook. Continue through the village to the main Ribčev Laz – Bohinjska Bistrica road. Continue past the municipality building, health clinic and Jože Ažman Culture Hall, and at the crossroads turn left and walk past the aquapark and towards to Bohinjska Bistrica railway station.
