nullIn the Balkan Mountains, a national park, four nature parks and numerous nature reserves have been established to protect flora and fauna. More than 570 km of hiking trails run through the national park. The mountains are the headwaters of several major rivers in the country, all of which flow into the Danube, but there are hardly any lakes in the mountains. Together with the Rhodopes, the Balkan Mountains are the place where you can best explore original Bulgaria with its beautiful small villages, crafts and traditions. Up to an altitude of 800 m, characterized by deciduous forests and continued by pines, firs and spruces, the highest part of the mountains is characterized by wooded meadows and bushes. The mountain range is particularly popular with hikers on the E3. Whether on a complete route or a day trip, along the European long-distance hiking trail, you can reach the most beautiful places in the mountains. The last part of the E3 stretches from Kom peak to Cape Emine and crosses Bulgaria from 650 to 700 km. On the way, you can decide whether to climb up to 100 peaks or walk past them.
